Upcycling of scrap fabrics, sample book fabrics, fabric off cuts, old clothing items or wool to produce unique, functional home decor articles. Funky Refab’s potted cacti are made from sample book fabrics, scrap fabrics or shweshwe, or crocheted and decorated with embroidery or beads. They are available in two sizes - 8cm or 10cm terracotta pots, all pots decoupaged and painted, and
each item uniquely handcrafted with the same care and attention to detail. These items can be bought directly from the business in Faerie Glen Pretoria. Larger orders can be shipped to anywhere in South Africa. Potted cacti are stocked by Sugar and Spice Tuisnywerheid in Olympus and now also Hannah's Place in Sedgefield. Other venues or markets where they can be bought, will be announced on the page. Funky Refab’s protea cushion covers are a truly South African product. Not only is the king protea South Africa’s national flower, but we also use shweshwe, which is a locally dyed and printed cotton fabric, for the protea applique which is cut out, assembled and then hand embroidered. Good quality fabric, preferably cotton or linen is used for the borders and back of each cushion. All cushions are 50 x 50 cm and have a zippered opening. Roll up storage pouches are made from fabric remnants, sample book fabrics or second hand sourced fabrics. Each pouch has 12 pockets providing neat and easy storage of crochet hooks, 24 colour pencils or koki pens or any other crafters’ hobby tools. A flap at the top prevents any of the contents from falling out. During the second half of the year Funky Refab’s Christmas decorations are available at various Christmas markets. The Christmas balls are sewn from shweshwe and scrap fabrics, decorated with beads, embroidery, buttons and tassels. The shweshwe fabric, which is widely used for traditional South African clothing , provides MADE IN SA flair. These balls look particularly lovely when hung on a weathered tree branch, a wire construction or other locally sourced crafty tree. Fabric tissue box covers are made to fit locally available tissue boxes of 21L x 11W x9cm H (200 off 2ply tissues). Details of which brands will fit is provided with each cover. Cat, doggy and bunny doorstops are available at Sugar and Spice, Glen Village shopping centre, Olympus, Pretoria. A huge quantity of fabric remnants used as batting is getting recycled and prevented from landing on rubbish dumps in the process. Funky refab also does any alterations to clothes, curtains, anything that requires mending. With a fashion design qualification and many years' sewing experience, all work is of a high standard and extremely neat. Through posting on Funky Refab’s page, we aim to create greater awareness of the huge quantities of fabrics and clothing that end up on landfills. We wish to share upcycling ideas and handcraft projects that incorporate recycling and to show some innovative work done by others who share the same passion to reduce waste and who consider the impact of our daily habits on our planet.
