So, I just returned from a solo weekend away - went house sitting for my brother's girlfriend in Zwartkop Golf Estate. I still have to "defrag" and unpack, but here are some snap shots of my long weekend, alone.

If I find the time, through the course of the week, I'll write captions to these, to tell a more complete story.

Meet the Agave Sunseeker.

It typically takes 8 to 15 years to reach maturity and produce its dramatic, arching flower spike. Like all agaves, this plant is monocarpic, so it blooms once at the end of its life and then slowly dies, usually leaving behind "pups" or offsets at the base.

The plant sends up a tall, thick stem ("death bloom") and this one is 2,5 meters tall, with soft yellow-green flowers. The bees go crazy for it and it will be a good food source for them, since the entire process—from the initial stalk appearance to the final bloom—takes several weeks to months.

Lately, I'm spending practically every Saturday morning at Cresta Shopping Mall, in Randburg - naturally, coffee becomes a priority, and what goes best with coffee?

So yeah, this is a post about that devil of a thing, sweet treats.

Here are three coffee spots there, I can recommend:

On a more budget friendly side, there is Xpresso, it is a few steps from the Cirk and every drink or pastry comes at a flat rate of R14 each; their coffees are top notch, and I have some firm favourites amongst their pastry selection, the custard croissant being my latest go-to.

However, if you are looking for handcrafted quality cakes, pastries and treats, right on top of them is Château Gâteaux. It is not cheap, but the quality is exceptional. They also stock the elusive Mozart, my all time favourite cake, but everything I've tried thus far, has blown my socks off.

If however you are looking for a more intimate setting, right across from them is a massive Mug 'n Bean, with some cosy booth seating towards the back. I can recommend their cheesecake, the one with caramelised pineapple and roasted coconut is an absolute winner, IF in stock.

Some friends show their love, by feeding you fat; my girlfriend Anita, is one of those. She recently gifted me a bar of Lindt's Dubai style chocolate and it's highly addictive - it's a milk chocolate bar filled with pistachio paste and crunchy kadayif - if you ever come across it, it's definitely worth a try.
