Karabah kilims with lily and flower designs are flat-woven Caucasian textiles famous for their lush, painterly floral motifs, like sweeping lilies, roses, and tulips. Originating from the South Caucasus, these flat-weave wool pieces were often inspired by 19th-century French Aubusson designs and traditionally feature vibrant blossoms set against dark backgrounds. Karabah floral flatweaves are deeply celebrated for their unique artistry and historical design elements. The Lily and Floral Motifs: Unlike the strict geometric patterns of traditional kilims, Karabah weavers used interlocking warps to create softly blended floral garlands, bouquets, and botanical elements. In some Armenian folk traditions, the cochineal rosette and blossoming lily were used to depict a struggle against invaders, which eventually evolved into classic floral folktales. Color Palettes: These kilims are well known for vibrant, contrasting colorways. You will often find vivid pinks, magentas, turquoises, and pale greens dramatically jumping off a dark field of deep navy or black. Flat-Weave Construction: These pieces feature a flat, pileless texture that makes them lightweight and ideal for both floor and wall display. Because of their rarity and age, vintage and antique pieces are highly sought after.
