FULL-HOUSE RECONFIGURING AND RENOVATION

YEAR: 2025
OVERVIEW:
Mid-20th-century suburban residence was given a fresh, new interior configuration and functionality, while maintaining key styling elements from the original design.
Existing rooms were consolidated into new bedrooms, bathrooms, and circulation spaces, with an all-new open-plan central living space and new kitchen rounding out the scope of internal alterations. New, large-format aluminium stacking and sliding doors were added to the rear garden elevations of the house, and an all new garden entertainment pavilion & braai is in the works.

OVERVIEW:
Clients wanted to create a stand-alone building to replace an old, dated, and unused swimming pool, that would function as a home office, and double-up as additional guest accommodation, in a contemporary finish that would compliment the existing, late 20th century main house.

Specifications: 50sq.m, self-contained “tinyhouse” with open-plan livingroom / office / meeting space and small kitchenette, bathroom, and elevated loft office / bedroom platform, with 45-degree gable-ended roof profile to conform to property & neighbourhood design requirements.

OVERVIEW:
A contemporary residence of unique architectural styling, nestled against the eastern flank of Devil's Peak in Newlands, Cape Town, struggled with appalling insulation and draftiness on the upper storey. The owners needed to reduce the extent of glazing that contributed to the "hot box” or "freezer” conditions in the space, whilst keeping, or even enhancing the views up towards the mountain. An all-new set of facades consisting of double-glazed slot windows was designed to compliment the architectural style of the house. The new window configurations reduce glare, allow for more effective internal screening (blinds), and effectively frame specific, featured views.

Specifications: 90 sq.m, 2 bedroom upper floor, with exposed rafters, new insulated ceilings, and new window configurations and glazing. New fibre-cement plank cladding to all exterior walls. All new fixtures and finishes throughout, with upgraded electrical installation and flooring.

The owner of this sturdy home built in the 1980s, wanted to completely reimagine the look, feel, and scope of the house. A complete rearrangement of the ground floor layout was proposed, with an all new upper floor for the main bedroom suite, and a new roof profile and fenestration for the entire building.

Specifications: 400 sq.m, 5 bedroom residence, with new double garage, utility spaces, guest accommodation, multiple open-plan living and entertainment spaces, and all new first floor addition with main bedroom, dressing room, en-suite, private lounge, and sun terrace.
New exposed-rafter roof configuration with clerestory windows, solar electrical panels, and pool heating.
All new fixtures, finishes, electrical, and home automation installations.

This project involved a complete gut renovation of an existing apartment, transforming it into a modern 170 sq.m residence with two bedrooms, two en-suites, and expansive living areas including a kitchen, scullery, library, and guest powder room. The redesign included new wall configurations, a frameless glazed balcony enclosure, innovative curved ceiling designs, and comprehensive updates to the kitchen and en-suites. Electrical and lighting layouts were reimagined alongside a detailed specification of finishes to elevate the living experience.

Clients wanted a generous residence (to sleep at least 12), with contemporary styling and finishes, that took advantage of two significant Indian Ocean views whilst responding to the site’s slope and structural height restrictions. The new residence would fall within an estate with strict design guidelines established in the 1990s, and the concept sought to stick to those rules, but in a fresh, 21st century way.

Specifications: 5 bedrooms + 5 en-suites, large kitchen with separate scullery, opening out to generous outdoor dining, main living room with outdoor living areas, indoor - outdoor ease of movement, lap pool, fire pit, guest cloakroom, generous covered patio with braai, utility areas, & 3 vehicle garage with workshop. Feature stone wall finishes, black & charcoal colour palette and 45 degree roof slope as defined by estate guidelines, cement screed floors, and exposed beams and rafters throughout.
