The existing kitchen at this holiday home (or “Summer House” as we came to call it) was tucked into a galley space, under a lean-to roof in a long sliver down the side of the property. It had been partly renovated in an effort to draw the kitchen back into the main open plan living and dining space, but it still felt… - _unwelcome_ ?! Definitely, not the main guest at the party! An add-on! With this renovation, we pulled the kitchen out of its corner, and gave it serious hero credentials! A bold island, special lighting, a proper breakfast bar for the non-cooks to hang out with the chefs, all while keeping the original galley space for all that hard working back of house usage that one needs in a big busy holiday home. The new hero kitchen at this holiday home (or “Summer House” as we came to call it) flows beautifully through to the dining room and further living spaces, with a breakfast bar for the non-cooks to hang out with the chefs, as well as providing a holding space (open plan spaces can easily become “baggy” and unstructured if there is no form to the spaces within the larger plan). The raised counter also cleverly hides a messy counter, because - life! The original much smaller galley space kitchen is just visible in the background, behind the new tea and coffee station - all that hard working back of house usage that one needs in a big busy holiday home is now happily accommodated there! New joinery and lighting was carefully chosen to blend with the clients original pieces and fittings - the pendants in foreground were respirated to match new ones in the kitchen! We love keeping and reusing, creating a patina. Lighting 💡by .luce 📸
