14 Habits of Highly Organized People (That You Can Start Today!)
Want to feel more organized without spending your entire weekend decluttering? Here’s the good news: small shifts in how you think and what you do each day can lead to BIG, lasting results!
Organized people don’t necessarily have more time or better storage. They simply build little habits that make life easier. Here are some of my favourites!
1. They Avoid the Big Black Hole.
That junk drawer, spare room, or mystery cupboard where things disappear? Tackle it before it becomes a place where clutter goes to hide!
2. They Reward Themselves.
Not excited about decluttering? Pair it with something you enjoy. Listen to your favourite podcast, sip a fancy coffee, or reward yourself when you’re done.
3. They Say No to Spillover.
If a drawer, shelf, or closet is full, they don’t keep squeezing things in. They pause, edit, and make room before adding more.
4. They Build in Behavioural Hooks.
They connect a new habit to something they already do. For example, when they take off their coat, they hang it up right away. Easy!
5. They Make Decluttering Part of Cleaning.
While wiping the counter or dusting a shelf, they remove a few things they no longer need. A little editing keeps clutter from creeping back in.
6. They Spend 30 Seconds Now to Save Hours Later.
They put things back where they belong, deal with the mail, and hang up the towel instead of leaving little jobs for Future Them.
7. They Move Donations into the Car.
Once the donation bag is ready, it goes straight into the car. That way, it’s much more likely to leave the house instead of becoming permanent hallway décor!
8. They Have Plenty of Hooks and Clear Floors.
Hooks make it easy to hang coats, bags, and everyday essentials. The easier it is to put something away, the more likely it is to happen.
9. They Keep a Decluttering Bag Handy.
Keep a donation bag in your closet so you can easily add clothes and other items you no longer need. When it’s full, it’s ready to go!
10. They Adjust Their Shelves to Fit Their Stuff.
Instead of forcing items into awkward spaces, they adjust shelf heights to make the best use of the room they have.
11. They Organize in Zones (or What I Call Departments!).
Just like a department store, everything has a designated area. Think baking supplies together, paperwork in one spot, and pet items in their own department. No more searching all over the house!
12. They Give Everything a Home.
When an item has a designated place, it’s easier to put away and find again. If you don’t know where something belongs, that’s a great place to start!
13. They Do a Quick Daily Reset.
Ten minutes before bed can make a big difference. Return stray items, clear a surface, and set yourself up for a smoother morning.
14. They Think Before They Bring More In.
Before buying something new, they ask: Do I need it? Do I have space for it? Where will it live? A little pause can prevent a lot of clutter.
✨ YOUR TURN! Which of these habits do you already do, and which one would make the biggest difference in your home?
You don’t have to do everything at once. Pick just ONE small habit and give it a try this week. Small steps really do add up!
