Why did I make a barefoot boot kit?

I wanted a year-round shoe kit that complemented my best-selling Clog Kit, something you could wear through the colder months too.

I’m always looking for ways for people to make shoes at home, and that means taking away the shoe last and the making of your own soles, which is really skilled work. So instead I look for prefabricated soles made from natural materials: the clogs are wood, the espadrilles are jute, and these boots are natural rubber. Then it’s just a case of designing the leather uppers and working out how to attach them to the sole.

I had so much help from Yuliia Pekna , who designed all the patterns for this kit. Thank you, Yullia!

This is important as I only have limited soles in each size (sizes 36 to 42) and limited stock of suns of the leather colours.

Here are the leather colour options for the main part of your shoe. You can choose between grainy leather and smooth nubuck. I’ve kept it pretty muted so that your shoes or boots are easier to blend in with your wardrobe. But don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of options to add pops colour…

This is the optional ankle detail. You can choose to add fringing, an ankle collar or binding round the ankle with leather thong woven through

What if your next sewing project was a pair of boots?

I’ve kept the Barefoot Boot Kit as simple as possible on tools, so you only get what you really need, and every tool earns its place.

The screw punch means no mallet and no punch board. Its screw-in bits let you punch the stitch holes in both the leather and the sole, and then you swap to a bigger bit for the lacing holes. It’s one tool for every hole.

The knife comes with spare blades, so your cutting stays sharp and clean the whole way through. Clean edges make such a difference to the finish of your boots.

And the awl is the most used tool in my studio. You use it to mark the leather, so your cutting and punching are accurate from the start.

A peek of the colours: a mix of brights and more muted shades, in grainy leather and smooth nubuck, so you can play with colour and texture together.

The laces are plain and woven, from a British manufacturer. They’re a lovely way to add another pop of colour and give your boots their own identity.

Beautiful grainy veg-tan leather from Italy, plus a new line of smoother nubuck with a lightly sanded texture.

This one has a muted dark green woven lace with navy and coral leather. It’s proof that mixing colours doesn’t have to be loud to be distinctive.

The screw punch really is an ingenious tool. There are a lot of holes to punch in a pair of boots, and I wanted that part to be a pleasure for you, not endless noisy hammering!

this is my favourite bit, the choosing. When I designed the Barefoot Boot Kit, I didn’t want everyone ending up with the same pair. You’re the maker, so you get to decide how they look.

First, choose your colour. There are lots of shades, from easy everyday neutrals to something much bolder.

I’ve selected British made laces in contrast woven threads to make these boots a little bit different to what you’d find out there

Add a finishing detail at the ankle, like fringing or a woven section, or leave them clean and simple. It’s totally up to you.

A little heads up that the pre-order for the Clog Kit is closing in a few hours - at 6pm BST.

Kits will then be sent the week of the 22nd June so you could be wearing your brand spanking new clogs by early July 😎

Another long video today! Me showing how wide the pre cut toe pieces are. I’ve actually made them wider since the last Clog kit launch so that it’s accessible for even more people.

The wooden soles are true to size so, in a nutshell, just order your regular size.
