𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗽 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀, 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻. 𝗜𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲.

Herringbone has a reputation. Sharp lines, perfectly matched tones, a bit formal for a family kitchen.

It doesn't have to be.

A recent project in Histon had homeowners who loved the pattern but not the polish. Every standard oak finish they looked at felt too uniform for the character they wanted.

The answer was a rustic smoked European oak, dark smoked and tumbled. Smoking reacts with the natural tannins in the wood, deepening the colour variation already there. Tumbling softens the edges of each block, giving the floor a gentler, more settled feel underfoot.

The result is a herringbone floor that looks like it's always been there. Warm. A little uneven in the best way.

Herringbone doesn't have to mean formal. It just depends on the finish.

It started with a stand at the Guildhall in 2017. No showroom, just samples and a lot of conversations.

Nearly a decade on, the conversations haven't changed much: what wears well, what fits the room, what actually lasts. Just now you can see it all under one roof on Milton Road.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝘆.

At that first Cambridge show, most of the questions were the ones you'd expect. Which floor for a hallway. What wears best with a dog. What that herringbone pattern is actually called.

But one of our team had a different story that day. Weeks earlier, he'd been in Germany with Art of Clean, fitting a wood block floor at Dahlen Castle as part of a specialist installation programme. Proper old-world joinery, matched against a modern fitting standard.

It's not the sort of thing that comes up on every job in Cambridge. But it's the same attention that goes into a hallway in Trumpington or a living room off Mill Road. The scale changes. The care doesn't.

That everyday use should influence what you choose. But so should who's actually laying it.

𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺, 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲.

Back in September 2017, we didn't have a showroom yet. Just a stand at the Guildhall, some samples of herringbone parquet, and four of us. Pierre, Laurence, Sam and Neil were hoping people would stop and ask questions.

They did. All day.

That was the first ever Cambridge Home + Garden Show, and it was Art of Flooring's first proper introduction to the city we still work in every day.

We tend to work best with people who want time to properly understand their options, clear explanations along the way, and a project considered as a whole, not just a colour choice.

Our showroom in Cambridge is appointment-led, which gives us the chance to actually learn about your room, your household and your priorities before we start narrowing down products. That might mean looking at samples together, surveying the property, planning any preparation work, and arranging fitting.

It’s a fantastic achievement for our team and we’re incredibly proud to have our hard work and commitment recognised.

The winners will be announced at the Gala Awards Ceremony at the beautiful King’s College, Cambridge, on Thursday 24th September.
