I think we have a new fave Frenchic❤️ colour! This made to measure table is having a dark wax top and the wonderful Macaroon on the side rail, legs and drawer. We love it!

Stripping pieces by hand isn’t as much fun as you think!

We get to practice our carving skills sometimes though.

Once the thick old paint is removed we deepen the original carving and send the piece on its way as good as new - but 150 years old.

This will get sanded lightly to remove a few marks then it’s all done.

🔨 WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY

It’s only sanding… isn’t it?

Probably one of the least exciting parts of restoring old furniture — but also one of the bits that makes the biggest difference to the finished piece.

When an old pine piece comes into the workshop, stripping it is only the start.

Once any repairs are done, we work through several stages of sanding rather than attacking it with one coarse paper and calling it finished. The aim isn’t to make a 100+ year old piece look brand new — it’s to clean and prepare the timber while keeping the character that makes old pine so appealing.

We’ll usually finish around 150–180 grit, depending on the timber and the finish it’s having.

Too coarse and scratches can show through the wax or paint.
Too aggressive and you start removing the history along with the old finish.

It takes longer, and we get through a fair amount of sandpaper, but preparation is one of those jobs you really can’t cheat.

And yes… after 30+ years of doing this, sanding is still sanding. 😄

A very nice blanket box going out today. This one is unusual in that it has a candle compartment plus a really handy drawer underneath. Finished in clear wax and polished to a soft sheen.
