Beautifully complicated, wonderfully unpredictable and absolutely impossible to ignore!
This week weโre giving the spotlight to the gorgeous Hydrangea.
With their huge, cloud-like flower heads and an incredible variety of colours, hydrangeas are a real showstopper. From delicate blush pinks and dreamy blues to crisp whites, vibrant purples and those gorgeous antique greens, thereโs something rather magical about them.
But hereโs where things get interestingโฆ
Did you know that the colour of some hydrangeas can actually change depending on the acidity of the soil theyโre growing in?
๐ Acidic soil encourages blue flowers.
๐ฉท More alkaline soil encourages pink flowers.
๐ And somewhere in between, you can get some beautiful shades of purple!
Not all hydrangeas behave this way, though. White varieties generally stay white, regardless of soil pH.
And if you think theyโre just pretty faces, think again! Hydrangeas are made up of lots of tiny individual flowers, often surrounded by larger decorative florets that give them that wonderfully full appearance.
Theyโre also a flower that changes beautifully with age. As they mature, their colours deepen, soften and develop those gorgeous vintage tones that florists absolutely love.
Of course, theyโre not always the easiest flower to work with. Theyโre thirsty little things, can be temperamental once cut and need a little extra TLC to keep them looking their best.
But when they behave themselves? Oh, theyโre worth every bit of effort!
