I genuinely can’t remember why I stopped making this necklace.

I first made this design right back in the early days of Claire Howard Jewellery and, somewhere along the way, it quietly disappeared from my collection.

But recently I’ve been looking at it again and thinking… why?!

It has so many of the things I still love now: a handmade hammered silver hoop and a wonderfully unruly collection of freshwater pearls hanging beneath it. Creamy whites, soft pinks, tiny silvery pearls and those gorgeous deep plum ones. Nothing perfectly matched and nothing too formal.

So, after quite a long absence, the Gathered Pearls Necklace is back — and today I’ve added it to my website.

There’s actually a rather lovely reason why bringing back one of my earliest designs feels particularly poignant this September, but I’m saving that story for tomorrow evening’s Join Me at My Bench email.

From babysitting… to 40th birthday cufflinks!

There are some commissions that make you wonder quite where the years have gone, and this is definitely one of them. These cufflinks were commissioned as a 40th birthday present for someone I used to babysit for. Yes. 40th. I’m choosing not to dwell on what that says about my age…

I was given the family logo – this fabulous little greyhound – and, thanks to the consummate skills of Stuart, who does all my engraving, we were able to turn it into something that could be worn and treasured.

And just look at the detail! I love how beautifully the original artwork has translated onto the silver, right down to that curling tail and tiny face. I made the oval fronts to suit the shape of the design and added those lovely curved cufflink backs, which I think finish them off beautifully. The hallmark for his 40th year is also added to the back.

This is exactly why I enjoy commissions so much. Taking something that already has a story and a meaning, and turning it into a piece of jewellery that belongs to one particular person.

What a treat of a commission to make – although I’m still slightly stuck on the fact that someone I babysat for is now 40. 😂

Happy 40th birthday – I hope these are worn for many years to come. ❤️

I’m all set up and ready to go at Creake Abbey today!

The Summer Gift Fair is open 10-4 and it’s a beautiful day.

I’ve already nipped to see the fabulous Annabel at Peppy Neds to pick up a millionaire’s cup for Small. 🥇

Creake Abbey Summer Gift Fair

I’m on tour tomorrow at Creake Abbey. The Summer gift fair is on from 10-4 and there’s going to be so many beautiful stalls there for you to see….

Sue Welfare’s reduction Lino prints are in the window in front of my bench and there is another lovely long one inside the shop.

I’ve got two Sea Treasures necklaces on my bench today 🌊

This necklace is really about those little things we collect on days by the sea — shells, pebbles, bits and pieces that find their way into our pockets and come home with us.

The silver pendant is textured with waves and sea bubbles, with tiny cockle and scallop shells and a blue chalcedony bead, like a little wave-worn marble.

Whether your happy place is the Norfolk coast, Cornwall, Scotland or somewhere else entirely, it’s a necklace for anyone who carries memories of the sea with them.

A little pocketful of happy memories, made in silver. 🌊

Back to work today… and I don’t think I realised quite how much I needed a holiday until I stopped.

Running a small business means there’s always something you could be doing. Something to make, photograph, order, reply to, post, plan or worry about. Even when you shut the shop door, your brain doesn’t necessarily get the message.

We spent the first few days in Dorset doing very little at all. We dossed around, read books, ate ice creams and generally took it easy. And slowly I realised just how run down my battery had become.

Then I started to find my feet again.

We learnt about Mary Anning and went looking for fossils on the beach. We visited the Tank Museum and heard stories of incredible bravery. We climbed hills to find old chapels where women once went to ask for husbands. We ate cream teas, read more books, walked, talked and played a LOT of Monopoly.

Somewhere amongst all of that, I stopped thinking quite so much about work.

I genuinely think I’ve come home a little bit different. Not in a dramatic I went to Dorset and found myself sort of way, but rested, curious again and actually really pleased to be heading back to my bench.

There is plenty waiting for me this week, including my first ever Creake Abbey Summer Gift Fair on Friday, but for once it feels exciting rather than overwhelming.

Turns out the best thing I brought home from Dorset wasn’t a fossil or a souvenir.

It was my battery back.

Although I also brought home a fairly impressive pile of washing too.

Two years! 🥂

I daren’t actually light the candle — a naked flame balanced in a chocolate brownie in a holiday cottage feels like it might be tempting fate — but this is what two years of having a shop on the high street looks like… and it’s damn great!

Two years ago today I opened the door to my little shop in Fakenham for the first time. I don’t think I could have imagined then quite how much I would love having a place of my own to make, sell, chat, teach, experiment and generally fill with jewellery.

But the very best bit has been the people.

So thank you. To those of you who pop in for a chat, come back to choose another piece of jewellery, bring your friends in, book a workshop, trust me with something special, wave through the window when I’m at my bench, recommend me to someone else or simply follow along from afar. You’ve made my little shop feel like so much more than four walls and a front door.

And a particularly big thank you to Charlotte, who is holding the fort this week while the three of us have escaped to explore a different bit of coastline. It feels rather lovely to be able to celebrate my shop birthday while knowing it’s in very safe hands back home.

So I’m raising my glass of amaretto to two years on Fakenham High Street — and to all of you who have been part of them. 🥂

There are two rather unusual things happening at Claire Howard Jewellery this week…

Firstly, Charlotte is in charge! 👑

We’re taking a week’s break, so Charlotte will be holding the fort, looking after the shop and generally keeping everything running while I’m away.

And secondly…

MY BENCH IS TIDY. 😳

I feel this needs documenting because it is almost certainly a once-in-a-lifetime event. Usually there are tools, scraps of silver, half-finished ideas, drawings, bits I’ve picked up and put down again and approximately 47 things that I definitely still need out.

But this week? Look at it. You can actually see the bench.

Please be nice to Charlotte while I’m away — and perhaps pop in just to witness the extraordinarily tidy bench before I come back and ruin it again. 😂

Saturday 15th: 10–2
Tuesday 18th – Saturday 22nd: 10–2

Then I’ll be back, normal hours will resume… and I give the bench approximately 17 minutes. 🔨

Sea glass pendants

We had the loveliest workshop yesterday making sea glass necklaces.

I loved that in the room we had someone making a special birthday gift for a close friend, someone using a gift voucher given by best friends for her big birthday, and a mother and daughter celebrating a a birthday. It really was a celebration!

There was also something wonderful about this group- everyone was really encouraging and complimentary of each other’s work, it was such a pleasurable group to spend the day with.

I think this workshop is the hardest of the ones I offer, but everyone always leaves full of pride with what they’ve made.
