Some exciting news – we've been following a thread. If you think our Judy and Vanessa have been a bit quiet of late – yes, we know that's hard to imagine! – they've been working on something special
They've been spending a lot of time in the research labs of one of our thread suppliers, located on the French/Swiss border, where development work has been going on for some years to produced a new, revolutionary thread.
And it was all based on one of those 'what if...?' conversations we Sew and Sew sisters seem to have in our idle moments.
We talked to the R&D people at a trade fair years ago, their eyes lit up, and the rest is history...
Using unique polymer materials, and analysis of the photochromic properties shown by chameleons and some squid, plus the pigments used in fabrics from many different designers and brands – which is where we came in –, the scientists have now developed thread able to 're-shade' itself to the fabrics with which it's used, giving truly invisible results.
With the new thread – which, as you can see, has now moved from development to limited-run production – you can achieve a perfect match to whatever fabric you're sewing, without having to keep a mass of colours to hand, or fiddle with that far- too-hard-to-see 'invisible' thread.
Instead, you just sew with a thread that's colourful and easily visible while you're working with it, then watch as it 'vanishes' over a short time – about 24 hours – to match your fabrics.
The scientists say they're excited by its possibilities for military uses such as camouflage – we just can't wait to get patchworking with it!
It's been fascinating watching this new product come together, and we're really excited by this amazing development, which is expected to be on the market as a Lady Sew and Sew exclusive about this time next year.
