Fitting a blind should not involve putting six holes in a window frame you paid a lot of money for.

That is the standard method, though. Brackets screwed into the uPVC, holes that stay there long after the blind has gone, and nothing to be done about them if you change your mind in three years.

Perfect Fit works differently. The frame clips into the beading around the glass and holds itself there — nothing drilled, nothing screwed, and no marks left behind whenever it comes out again.

A waiting room says a good deal about a business before anybody speaks.

Sun in a patient's eyes, a louvre missing out of a run of twelve, a blind nobody has been able to clean since it went up — people read all of it, and they read it while they are sitting there with nothing else to do.

Verticals suit commercial premises for one practical reason above the rest: individual louvres can be replaced. One damaged panel is one panel, not a whole new blind.

Nearly every window in Northern Ireland has a radiator under it, and whatever hangs above that radiator gets cooked twice a day.

Through the winter it is hot air rising for hours at a time, every day, against the back of the blind. Real timber dries out and starts to bow. Fabric curls at the bottom bar and never sits straight again.

Faux wooden slats do not take it personally. They stay flat and true above a radiator for years, and they bring the warmth of timber to the window without the behaviour of it.

A rented house hands you magnolia walls, a bare floor and naked windows, and almost nothing you are allowed to change.

New builds are much the same for the first year. Everything is clean, nothing is finished, and the windows are the part that makes the whole place still look like a viewing rather than a home.

Roller blinds are the one move that is fully yours. They come down with you if you move, they go up without touching a wall, and they put colour across the biggest blank surface in the room.

With the heating running and the vents shut, whatever is in the air keeps circulating. Dust settles on the one surface at the window that has nowhere to shake it off to, and fabric blinds hold on to far more of it than people expect.

The heating went on in most houses this week. A fair share of it is heading straight for the glass.

Window panes sit colder than every wall around them, and the air in the room keeps moving towards that cold. It is why the seat nearest the window is the one nobody picks in October, no matter what the thermostat says.

From there, a hanging chain is at eye level, within reach and interesting. It is the one feature of a room that gets past every other bit of child-proofing in the house, and the cat has its own reasons for finding it.

The garden room is about to drop out of use for six months, and it happens without anyone deciding it.

One dull week, one evening where the glass turns black at half seven, one afternoon where the glare is too much to sit in, and the door stops being opened. By November it is storing the drying rack.

Some rooms in the house never get the sun at all. Not in the morning, not at four, not in July.

North-facing rooms live on flat grey light, and by this time of year that light has no warmth left in it whatsoever. Add a blind that has faded a shade paler every summer and the room feels chilly before the heating is even discussed.

The window is the largest surface in the room you can change in an afternoon. A warm shade or a textured weave at that size shifts how the whole space reads.
