An illuminating visit to Wallace Collection in London. It is a collection of not only paintings and fine furniture but also great works in silver. This nineteenth century solid silver camel held my attention for a time, quite extraordinary, I’ve not seen its like before.

FOR SALE. I’ve always liked silhouettes, I’m not sure why, perhaps it’s because they represent real people and there is a great skill in the ex*****on. I really like this one, it’s a very individual profile of a known sitter (Susannah Hyde Gale 1749-1823 the wife of Admiral Alan Gardner, first Lord Gardner 1742-1809.) and painted by a highly regarded silhouette artist Charles Rosenberg of Bath. To cap it off it even has the original frame! What’s not to love. Available to view in detail at the website.

FOR SALE. This will not be to everyone’s taste but I think it’s just wonderful. Art Deco period, it shows a group of ladies chatting and joking. The whole has a green tinge probably to indicate a smokey environment. It appeals to me as it is just so unique and evocative of a time, it is dated 1929. Annoyingly there is an illegible signature but I suspect it is by someone rather good. Available to view in detail at the website.

A very interesting room at Canons Ashby, Northamptonshire. The servants hall originally built in the 1580s as a private family dining room (the winter parlour), it was later handed over to the household staff in the 18th century to use as their communal dining and working quarters but thankfully kept this wonderful painted panelling.

NEW STOCK ONLINE. A fine group of artworks each full of interest and decorative impact. We have a portrait oil from the late Victorian period by Florence Small (1859-1933) a wonderful studio study. A portrait of a jovial cavalier by the great William Breakespeare (1856-1914) one of his best. A landscape by James Aumonier (1832-1911) ‘On the Fellside’ a study of light on the moors. A set of three signed prints by Louis Icart (1888-1950) the quintessential Art Deco artist. Finally a fine early Victorian family group portrait in watercolour by Frederick Tatham (1805-1878) a member of William Blake’s circle. All available to view at the website.
