When I’m choosing materials for a space, I’m thinking about the every day.

Whether that natural stone will age well over time - deepening in tone, softening at the edges.

How comfortable the seating really is, in the quiet of the afternoon.

Because real luxury isn’t something you just see - it’s something you experience.

I once had a client tell me that the room we designed together had “made her mornings better.”

She’d find herself lingering longer with her coffee, just because the space felt calm.

Sometimes, a room just needs a little love - and a fresh pair of eyes.

I remember working on a living space that had so much potential, but something about it just didn’t feel right.

The proportions were off. The light felt flat. And even with lovely pieces, the room didn’t feel cohesive or comfortable.

So we listened.
To the way the client used the space.
To what mattered most in their day-to-day.
To what was missing, but hard to articulate.

We added;

I’ve just got back from a lovely break in Lindos and somewhere between exploring the centre, sitting by the pool and actually having time to think, I found myself watching people around the buffets like they were adding pick and mix to a sweet bag.

A bit of this, loads of that, definitely one of those… all the things.

Funnily enough it did get me thinking about how we choose things for our homes.

A kitchen saved from Pinterest. A sofa you loved in a hotel. A paint colour from a friend’s house. Those tiles you’ve had saved on Instagram for three years…

All lovely. But do they actually work together? (Yes, my teenagers had some questionable plates of food at times).

It’s so easy to choose each part of a home individually and then wonder why, when it’s all finished, something doesn’t quite feel right - that’s why we are always looking at the whole picture.

Even if you’re doing the kitchen now and the living room next year, you can plan them together. You don’t need to buy everything at once – but knowing where you’re heading makes such a difference.

And yes, sometimes our job involves telling you that the thing you absolutely LOVE isn’t going to work, nicely, obviously – always :)

Your home should still feel completely like you, just with all those lovely individual choices actually working together.

So if you’ve spent your summer creating your own Pick & Mix of ideas, we have room for one, possibly two, more projects before the end of the year.

Nobody feels embarrassed calling a mechanic.

You don't service your own car or diagnose an engine problem not because you couldn't try, but because you know the value of someone who does it every day and gets it right.

Interiors is different somehow. There's this quiet assumption that you should be able to figure it out yourself. That needing help means your taste isn't good enough. Or that you should have known better than to end up with a room that doesn't quite work.

But getting a space to feel genuinely right isn't just about taste. It's about proportion, light, sequence, the relationship between materials, knowing which decisions unlock the others. Those are skills built over years and hundreds of projects.

The clients I work with have perfectly good taste. What they want is someone who can translate that taste into a home that actually feels the way they imagined it would.

That's not a gap. That's just knowing when to bring in the right person.

Three o'clock on a hot afternoon, and the room everyone loved in April is suddenly the room nobody wants to sit in.

It's not a design flaw. It's just glass doing exactly what glass does, pulling in every bit of that afternoon sun with nowhere for the heat to go.

The fix usually isn't blackout blinds and giving up on the light that made you choose bifolds and rooflights in the first place. It's shading that stops heat before it reaches the glass, a way for warm air to actually escape upwards instead of pooling at ceiling height, and thinking about where the sun sits in July, not where it sat in May.

Most of the time it's a handful of small, sensible adjustments. Not a big project. Just the right ones, in the right order.

When we talk about interiors, we often focus on the finished result.
The colours, the furniture, the overall feel.
But every item in a home has a backstory.
Where it was made.
Who made it.
How it got there.
And increasingly, clients are becoming more aware of that even if they don’t always have the time or headspace to research it themselves.

This is where good design guidance becomes important.
Because sourcing isn’t just about what looks right.
It’s about:
- quality
- longevity
- and, where possible, responsible production

That might mean choosing:
- suppliers who prioritise fair labour practices
- materials that age well rather than deteriorate quickly
- or makers who produce in smaller, more considered quantities

Not perfectly. Not all the time.
But intentionally.

It’s also about avoiding a common trap:
👉 buying quickly, cheaply, and repeatedly.

Because while a lower price point can feel like a win in the moment, it often leads to:
- replacements
- inconsistencies
- and ultimately, higher overall spend

Thoughtful interiors don’t need to be extreme or restrictive.
They just need to be considered.

A balance of:
- investment pieces that anchor a space
- carefully chosen supporting items
- and a clear understanding of where quality really matters

Because a well-designed home doesn’t just look good.
It reflects better decisions for you, and beyond the room itself.
