It feels like yesterday I finished some of these pieces.

I love seeing how my use of colour and light has changed over time.

It seems like I’ve moved more towards realism for a lot of these recent pieces but I still love including that contemporary aspect that only a painting can give you.

This one thing changed the way I paint forever…

When I used to paint as a hobby years ago, I would stock up on loads of different colours and shades of paint.

Not only was this costing me more money, I was running out of places to keep each new colour.

Honestly I had 2 or 3 large boxes full of acrylics in every variety of colours.

Then I got the best piece of advice that totally changed my artwork… don’t use paint straight from the tube.

If you want a colour, mix it.

If you aren’t sure how to get that colour, you’ll eventually figure it out from practice and trial + error.

This taught me so much about how to mix, colour theory, temperatures and values etc.

I’m not joking when tell you it changed my life.

Suddenly my ability to paint light took off, I understand the relationships between colours and how to paint shadows without making your palette muddy.

It also just makes your artwork so much more unique.
Practicing painting was less about training my hands and more about sharpening my eye.

I learned to see the colours that are actually there and not the preconception of what it ‘should’ be.

I don’t do art lessons, but if I ever decide to, this will be the NUMBER 1 thing I will try to convey.

I could talk about this stuff for hours lol.
Anyway, painters - don’t paint straight from the tube.

Trust me.

Long pensive stare off into the distance for this one.

Some of my favourite paintings ever have come and gone in the blink of an eye because that’s how Instagram/FB works.

Yesterday’s news is old news.

The bad news is you LOVE this painting, is that it has already found its new home (yay 🙏)

‘Closure’ is one of those moody, atmospheric paintings of the sticks that so many people connect with.

It’s such a cool scene to paint, hence why I keep coming back to this view and why it always seems to be a favourite for so many.
