🌸There’s a lot of hard graft behind a bunch of flowers.

Here’s a little of what our LNFF team have been up to throughout October. Clearing beds, planting shrubs, pricking out and potting on next year’s flowers, while still picking this year’s. Usually bent double, judging by these photos!

By the time a bunch leaves the farm, there have been months of work getting it to that point. Much of it muddy, repetitive and rather less photogenic than the flowers themselves.

It takes patience, sheer graft and a sense of humour. Thankfully, this lovely lot have all three, and I’m very grateful to them. A big thank you to our amazing volunteers too. We simply couldn’t achieve what we do without you.

And sorry, Alex, you’re missing from these photos — generally because you’re the one behind the camera! We appreciate all your hard work too.

The flowers might get most of the attention, but the LNFF team deserve their moment too!

🌸Apparently, we have a team uniform… and I don’t mean our branded navy T-shirts! 😂

I think most of the LNFF team have now succumbed to buying a pair of Merry People boots 🥾

When we are in and out of the Flower Barn all day, being able to pull them on and off quickly makes life so much easier—especially when it’s muddy and you’ve only just taken them off…

They’ve been particularly useful for harvesting on those autumn mornings when the dew is heavy: too warm for wellies, but definitely wet enough to need something waterproof.

Mine are so comfortable that I still haven’t got around to replacing my walking boots. I can happily walk miles in them.

And now we’re all eyeing up the brighter colours to cheer us through the winter months. I wonder which LNFF team member will be the first to crack!

Although, to be clear, this is the only time you’ll ever see our boots lined up this neatly—usually, they’re scattered around the Flower Barn, waiting for the next muddy mission.

Alstroemerias… back for another appearance! 😄

Following on from my post about these rather underrated flowers, I set Alex Alexandra Louise and Amy Amy Garrett an alstroemeria challenge!

Off they went into the field to choose their flowers. The only rule? Their arrangements had to include alstroemerias.

And here are the results. Alex’s beautifully generous jug of pinks, peaches and autumn colour, and Amy’s stunning airy statement arrangement with those lovely long stems left to do their thing.

I love seeing their different styles. So different from one another, yet equally beautiful.

Quite a step up from my old “garage forecourt flower” description! 😂

🌸October… and still all this! 🌸

“Have you still got flowers?” Quite a few people have asked me this recently. Well, yes we certainly have! 😄

These are some of the flowers we’ve been picking, along with a few bunches wrapped and ready to head off on their travels.

We may not have huge quantities of any one variety now, but put them together and our mixed buckets for events and wholesale are looking absolutely gorgeous.

There’s still plenty to pick, and we’ll keep going until the first frost puts a stop to it!

Alstroemerias… the Marmite flower of the flower world? 😬

I used to call them “the garage forecourt flower”. Their fantastic vase life made them a familiar sight in supermarkets and outside garages, and I think they became rather a victim of their own success.

They certainly weren’t top of my planting list when I started the flower farm. But someone suggested we give them a go, and we haven’t looked back!

They’re incredibly popular with our Pick Your Own Flower customers. Four weeks ago, they’d been picked almost bare… and now look at them. These photos were taken this week!

Last year, ours kept flowering until 5th November, when the first proper hard frost finally stopped them. You can’t ask for much more than that.

I’ll admit, some have been a bit tricky to get established, but once they get going, there’s no stopping them. Beautiful colours, a brilliant vase life, and the bees enjoy them too.

And my top picking tip? Leave the snips behind! On established plants, hold the stem low down and give it a gentle upward tug, pulling it away from the base. This encourages fresh flowering shoots.

So, alongside the obvious dahlias, asters and chrysanthemums, alstroemerias would definitely be on my list for flowers to take us through to the first frost — in a flower farm or a garden.

Are you a fan, or do they still remind you of picking up a bunch while paying for petrol? 😬🌸

I love this time of year. As the rhythm of the flower field slows, there’s a chance to look back — and what a season it has been! So many flowers have left our field to make someone’s day just that little bit more special.

Looking through our summer photos, we found these gorgeous buttonholes and thought they deserved their very own space on the grid.

A little flower bud, a seed head, a delicate leaf or curling tendril — each carefully chosen to bring the wedding flowers together.

Now, I may have many skills 😬 but fiddly buttonhole making isn’t one of them. I haven’t the patience! Somehow, I always find a very important job in the flower field that only I can do… 😂

Thankfully, our lovely florists gives every little detail the care it deserves. Let’s take a moment to appreciate their handiwork.

Getting married in 2027? We’d love to chat about your flowers. Do get in touch through our website or send us a message. 🤍

We know it feels a little early to be talking about Christmas, but our wreath workshops are already booking up quickly.

So, if you’ve been meaning to book your place, this is your little nudge to do it now!

Come and spend a few lovely hours with us in the Flower Barn, surrounded by twinkling lights, the scent of fresh foliage and an abundance of beautiful things to choose from. Many of the ingredients including dried flowers and seed heads have been grown, harvested and carefully saved here on the farm throughout the year, which makes them feel all the more special.

We’ll guide you through making your very own festive wreath, but there’s no need to worry if you’ve never made one before. We’ll be there to help, and there’ll be plenty of time to enjoy the making, have a chat and create something you’ll be proud to hang on your door.

Come with a friend or come on your own — you’ll be very warmly welcomed.

Places are limited, so head to the link in our bio to see the dates and book your place.

We’d love to see you around our wreath-making table this Christmas.

Love, Alison & the LNFF team x
