The French House emerged from a shared interest in the French way of life and living that father and son, Stephen and Marcus Hazell, developed as they travelled around South West France. From a small beginning bringing interesting pieces back for friends in a broken down old Post Office van that had a tendency to be overcome with fatigue on an upward incline(not good in the Pyrenees) the idea for

the French House was forged and the first high street premises opened in York in 1997. The French House has remained a family business and prides itself on the personal customer service it provides, whether it be helping a client choose the right piece from a selection taken to their home or taking the trouble to source specific items in France. A large warehouse in France helps facilitate the movement of stock and new pieces arrive constantly. Many of the pieces we source are traditional 18th and 19th pieces - gilt mirrors, farmhouse tables and benches, period lighting, upholstered furniture, etc and we have a dedicated team of craftsmen who undertake any restoration work required. Increasingly we find vintage pieces that are given a new lease of life, transforming industrial or unusual artefacts into items suitable for modern day 21st Century living, or recovering antique chairs with up to the minute fabric designs. At The French House we like to think that we offer a wide range of antique and vintage pieces that fit easily into modern living and as so many items are unique it means that our clients can create a truly individual home or commercial interior and enjoy the experience.

Upholstered mirrors🪞We purchased two from the beautiful Chateau de Sancerre, in the heart of the Loire Valley, France. When you see them in situ with matching wallpaper and curtains it’s a maximalists dream! Fabric wrapping dressing mirrors became popular during the 19th century as a way of creating an opulent interior. This pretty mirror has been covered in a beige linen fabric with a red floral design. There is a decorative trim that sits on top of the fabric too. It’s now wonderfully time worn, and takes centre stage at the entrance to our showroom. I asked my upholstery collegue Alan what the most unusual item he has ever upholstered, he said a stair rail wrapped in leather. I suppose our desire to create a unique interior is as strong as ever 🌟 Bon weekend everyone, Claire x

Beautiful pieces that were made to be used, those which have lived a good life and have plenty left to give also. New stock is added to our website every Wednesday afternoon and we receive regular deliveries in from France, the next one being at the end of this week! They say antiques tell a story, and this lovely Louis XV sofa has one to tell - and it’s illustrated! We carefully removed the worn old fabric and to our delight it revealed a layer of calico, on it is written in pencil: “Edouard Chevalier, upholsterer from Orleans, for the Château de Montigny, 18 July 1869”. And he has drawn a wonderful self portrait, the chap certainly had a sense of humour and must have relished in leaving this message to be discovered by someone in the future. This will be preserved by us for sure when we reupholster it for the next custodian. And we shall leave a message too! I also found a photo of the beautiful chateau referred to by Edouard, and you can see it here as well. All of our items are available to hire as well as purchase and more details can be found on our website, or send us a message here. In the meantime we are preparing for our new stock drop which will go online tomorrow afternoon, and also in our York showroom. Do stop by should you be in the area! 😀🇫🇷

Fell down a rabbit hole earlier after discovering aka DJ Baguette! 🥖 Spreading joy throughout bakeries all over France playing DJ sets whilst shoppers buy their bread, he’s brilliant, take a a look at his Insta 🫶 He is currently on a ‘Tour de France’, should you be lucky enough to live near one of his ‘venues’!
