The French House emerged from a shared interest in the French way of life and living that father and son, Stephen and Marcus Hazell, developed as they travelled around South West France. From a small beginning bringing interesting pieces back for friends in a broken down old Post Office van that had a tendency to be overcome with fatigue on an upward incline(not good in the Pyrenees) the idea for

the French House was forged and the first high street premises opened in York in 1997. The French House has remained a family business and prides itself on the personal customer service it provides, whether it be helping a client choose the right piece from a selection taken to their home or taking the trouble to source specific items in France. A large warehouse in France helps facilitate the movement of stock and new pieces arrive constantly. Many of the pieces we source are traditional 18th and 19th pieces - gilt mirrors, farmhouse tables and benches, period lighting, upholstered furniture, etc and we have a dedicated team of craftsmen who undertake any restoration work required. Increasingly we find vintage pieces that are given a new lease of life, transforming industrial or unusual artefacts into items suitable for modern day 21st Century living, or recovering antique chairs with up to the minute fabric designs. At The French House we like to think that we offer a wide range of antique and vintage pieces that fit easily into modern living and as so many items are unique it means that our clients can create a truly individual home or commercial interior and enjoy the experience.

It’s such a delight when customers call into our showroom and fall in love with our pieces 💘 Even more of a delight (for me!) is to fill the gaps left by these vacated pieces once they leave for their new homes ✨

We’ve had a little showroom re-zhuzh this week to accommodate this attractive Louis XVI period (1760-1789) marble top cupboard. At some point it got painted a dark green colour, and has since been scraped back leaving a very handsome patina behind.

A huge (and super heavy) gilt carved Louis Philippe (circa 1850s) mirror sits on top and makes quite an impact.

These will be on our website soon, but in the meantime are available to view in our York showroom. Open every Saturday also.

Our buyers have been busy over the last few weeks visiting fairs, “vide greniers” and more, we have acquired some exciting finds, I can’t wait to unload these tomorrow 🙌

There’s just something about an authentic, honest and well used patina that’s quite hard for us to resist!

We sourced this tall butcher’s block table in the heart of France’s w**e region - Sancerre. This beautiful table spent much of its life absorbing the rituals of everyday life of rural France, it has a wonderful used texture, and sits on a three legged base. Strong and sturdy 💪

Our buyers Stephen and Kath are back in France, visiting lots of fairs which are now in full swing. This one is in the Nievres which is across from the Loire, where we do the majority of our sourcing ✨

With an abundance of various wares for sale, and a stall with an interesting lunch offering (😥 🐷) I can’t wait to see what makes it back here to the showroom late August 🇫🇷 🚐 💨

Reflecting timeless French elegance 🪞 ✨

We have this huge square, two tiered mirrored coffee table here in our York showroom. Mid century in style, it features a sleek black frame, mirrored plinths, and it beautifully reflects the light from every angle (and hence v tricky to photograph 😅)
