I used to look around and feel like everyone had it figured out but me. Settled job, settled city, settled life. Meanwhile I was starting over again.
Here's what I understand now: the timeline we measure ourselves againts was designed for a world that doesn't exist anymore, one job for life, one straight path, retire at 65, that world is gone. But the pressure to follow ist map didn't leave with it.
So if you feel behind, it's not because you failed the plan. It's because you're living in a reality the plan was never written for.
You're not behind. You're off script. And honestly, so is almost everyone, they won't admit it.

There was a script. A timeline. A plot you kept measuring your life against, feeling behijnd every time someone else looked like they had it all figured out.

I've just turned 37, and I don't have the things I was "supposed" to have by now. no house. no husband. no kids. I pivoted careers, moved to another country with no five-year plan. by every list I was handed, I'm behind.

but here's what I know at 37 that I didn't at 27: the linear path was never mine. every time I turned left when they said right, I found more of myself, not less.

This is for every woman who's ever felt behind for wanting a different life than the one she was supposed to want in her 30s.
