Kat's Flora

Kat's Flora NZ plant collector enjoying the challenge of growing plants. Especially the weird, unusual, or hard-to-find ones. Plus, unique one-of-a-kind items.

It seems I have always been interested in plants, right from an early age, I had my own piece of garden. My passion has altered over the years and now seems to be concentrated on succulents, euphorbias, plants that grow a caudex (including ceropegia), dischidia, and hoyas. Also, love bulbs and .... heaps of other things. I also have dabbled in crafts over the years, having recently returned to d

oing pottery. So have decided to focus on plant-related plant items. Pots, plaques, labels etc. Open to requests and suggestions. I have quite a severe hearing loss, so my little business is my only personal income.

Well, it's officially spring. Spring being all 4 seasons at times in NZ, today is very much a winter/spring day: cold, windy, and a bit wet.

Do you carry out your garden tasks by season, by equinox, by moon phase, or when you get around to it?

Photo of my dwarf peach tree always looks good.

Amazed how many people I see asking about pruning dwarf trees, like why? They are bred to be compact and great form. Don't prune fruit trees just because you think you should; do it because they need it.

So? I have many nights when I sleep poorly. But during the day, if I feel myself nodding off, I get up and go do something!

๐๐š๐ซ๐ญ ๐Ÿ:
Made my lunch and started eating. Decided to be nice and ask if he wanted the same (simple toasted loaf). Made his, handed it over. He sat down, polished the entire thing off, looked at me and goes: "Still eating?"

Well, yes... considering I had to stop to make yours, tell the washing machine to stop making noises, and go to the loo!

Tell me Iโ€™m not the only one living with this exact logic? ๐Ÿ˜‚

He's really good at putting things down, saying he will put them away later. Even if where they live is in the same area. Of course, later often never happens.

FYI, he is on crutches, but ...

He often sends me over to 'his space' to find a tool. Lol, of course, the number of times that he hasn't put 'said' tool back where he says I will find it. He will get all frustrated that I am blind and go over himself, only to admit (not apologise tho) that the tool isn't there.

As much as I love my pets, these young twins are just a bit full-on (if they aren't asleep).

Tearing around, jumping over my potted plants, knocking them over, having kitten fights. My poor plants!

I try to sneak into my plant areas when they aren't about; I wonder why....

I bet everyone has some frost damage showing in their garden right now.
Take this particular plant, for example: Pyrostegia venusta (Orange trumpet vine). It was in full flower mode just a month ago and is still trying to bloom. It usually never gets frosted because it is hidden behind large trees and relatively protected. Interestingly, the worst-affected side is the western side, which I find a bit strange.

Anyway, I see a lot of people asking the same question:
๐’๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐ˆ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ง๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐š๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐ง๐จ๐ฐ?
The answer is a big ๐๐Ž. Leave those sad leaves and stems alone for now! They still serve an important purpose:
โ€ข ๐’๐ก๐ข๐ž๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฌ: They protect the delicate, vulnerable buds hiding underneath.
โ€ข ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐œ๐ž ๐Œ๐š๐ง๐š๐ ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ: The plant can still draw some nourishment and resources from that older growth.
โ€ข ๐๐ซ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐ž๐ฐ ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ก: Pruning encourages fresh growth. This is a massive risk during frost season because that tender new growth will instantly freeze.

Frosts may continue for a few months yet, so be patient and leave your pruners in the shed!

We have this orange wonga wonga vine - Pandorea pandorana growing by our deck. The kittens think it is wonderful to climb up, so they can run about on the shade sail.

Such fun for the youngsters.

Where do your pets like to hang out?

Those stockings that I don't wear anymore have another really good use in my pottery production. Even better if the end is sewn shut.

Lots of people use gladwrap, but it goes silly when it gets wet and isn't reusable; these stockings mould to fit anything and make releasing the mould so easy.

These are approximately 15cm high. Handmade by myself. Time consuming, but cute and I hope something that will appeal to others.

What other colours would you like me to make them in?
