Charm and Strange Crochet

Charm and Strange Crochet Charm and Strange Crochet is your home for custom-made crocheted goods. I first opened this shop in 2016 under a different name.

It wasn't until spring of 2022 that I decided to get more serious about my business, and the first thing that needed to be re-vamped was the name! I chose Charm and Strange after some lyrics in the song Downward by the band Ripe. Ripe has described themselves as seeking to look at love and happiness with the same depth that many artists look at grief and sorrow - a sentiment that is clearly reflec

ted in all of their music, and one that resonates with me greatly as I have always been optimistic (almost to a fault). My goal as a crochet shop owner is to help you reduce your waste in and around the house. This is a goal that I have had for myself for a long time, and I want to make it easier for you to produce less waste as well! I know that when most people think about crocheted goods, they think of hats and scarves, so I carry a signature design that I love making for each of those as well. And how could I be Charm and Strange without my all-time best-selling item, Hats for Cats? These may not fit in to my goal of being "practical and functional," but they certainly add a degree of charm and quirk into the life of a cat owner. As if it were destiny, the cotton yarn that I have found to be the softest and the most durable is also made from 85% recycled cotton. This means that it saves the manufacturer 1,500 liters of water for every 75 gram ball over producing a ball of all-new cotton yarn! Even the paper label they put around each ball is made from 100% recycled paper, so I know they also have a commitment to sustainability. Sustainability is also why your packaging might look a little funny. Reusing is generally more effective than recycling, especially when it comes to plastic - so I reuse the packaging from my own online shopping to package orders from my shop. This also helps to keep my shipping costs down as I don't have to spend money on new packing materials - which is why I am able to offer free shipping on all orders at Charm and Strange Crochet! Most of the items in the shop are made from the above mentioned 85% cotton, 15% polyester yarn. Anything that is not cotton is made from a 100% acrylic yarn. This means that everything in the shop is machine washable (gentle cycle preferred) and technically dryer safe. Some shrinkage may occur, so I always recommend air drying your Charm and Strange Crochet items; if you do use the dryer, please use your lowest heat setting (or no heat if you have that option). Everything made at Charm and Strange Crochet is 100% handmade by me, Kate. I live in a smoke-free home with a cat in the metro Detroit area. If you have a severe cat allergy, please consider this when placing an order. My cat does not have access to my yarn storage, but I often work on the couch where he loves to snuggle with me. (Sometimes I have to shove him off of my lap just to be able to work!) Your order will not arrive covered in cat fur by any means, but if you need to order from a pet-free home, I understand. At this time, I can only ship to the United States and US territories/military bases.

If you've seen me at the Berkley Art Bash before, I will be at the very opposite end this year! Find me at booth #198, at 12 Mile and Tyler - facing Council Resale. Saturday should feel a bit cooler than yesterday and today, so come out and enjoy the slight break in the heat!

*you might not actually see me, but my husband and one of my very dear friends. I was sick for 2 weeks and I'm recovering ok now, but my energy is still low and I'm overheating very easily. It makes me really sad to think about not being able to be at my booth all day, but I am so incredibly grateful to have a support system so willing to run my booth for me!!! πŸ₯°

I dropped off several catnip mice at today. insisted on doing some quality control for my work before I dropped my wares off to be sold. Every single one passed! πŸŽ‰ He then went on to complain that he should not be denied such fine quality cat toys. I reminded him that he has two of these mice, and that just because he misplaced them under the couch or behind the TV doesn't mean he just gets several more when I have a business to run!

My first show of the season is TOMORROW!!! It's looking like it's gonna be a bit rainy, so why not come shop with over 100 local artists inside? Join me from 9 am to 3 pm at Plymouth Canton High School! Admission is $5, free for kids ages 12 and under. Your admission fee supports the school's band program, helping to fund sheet music, school instruments, concert uniforms, and competition fees. As always, there will be a raffle where every single vendor donates an item! Get a jump start on those Mother's Day, Father's Day, and summer birthday gifts. Or treat yourself. Or both! Both is good. 😁

Here's what I've been for myself lately! I actually crocheted all of these back in fall/winter. Uh, 2024. 🫣 I knew I was making this exact sweater for myself back then, but as I often do, I put this on the back burner and made a bunch of other stuff instead of finishing this one project. I even blocked all of the squares by early 2025!!! But I didn't start stitching everything together until the beginning of this year. The different yarns in this sweater are really really special to me and someday I'll make a long post or maybe a video detailing the meaning of each one, even though probably nobody cares very much lmao but for now I'll just say that if you've been following me for a bit, you know how much I love colors, so this sweater shouldn't be a surprise. ☺️
It is now fully stitched together, and I'm working on the hem. Because I am a crazy person, I opted to go for the back loop slip stitches method I used in my last sweater (see a few posts back) even though the pattern for this granny square sweater said to use back loop single crochet method. πŸ™ƒπŸ« πŸ«¨ I did like 6 rows of the sc method and then mentally kicked myself in the a$$ as I frogged it because I know, I KNOW, the sl st method takes like 3-6 times as long to make, but it looks and wears soooo much better. So that's what I'll be doing for approximately the next 8-12 weeks. Or maybe 17 months. 🀣 I still have to cuff the sleeves and stitch up the collar, after all.

🧢 Yarn: too many to list lmao but they're all fi*****ng weight, mostly some kind of wool/wool blend, a few are cotton, one is probably sport weight lol oops but blocking made it the right size so idc πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜‡

I've been trying out some new little patterns for Pride! I will always stock at least a few Pride Poos, but I've attended the same events in June enough times that I can tell I need to change things up a little. This and are both prototypes as I familiarize myself with the patterns and decide if I like them enough to make several in the different Pride flag colors. I don't have an idea for pricing yet, and I definitely need more practice with sewing the dino's legs on. I wanted to share what I've been crocheting recently, and to show part of the testing process! Even with as much crochet experience as I have, the first piece I make of a new pattern - especially - often comes out a bit off. It takes time, patience, and LOTS of repetition to make something look truly Insta-ready. If anyone seeing this is learning a new art, skill, or hobby, remember to be patient with yourself and with your hands! πŸ‘πŸ˜‰πŸ˜Š
