Great neighborhoods create value through connection, not just housing.

At Arise Knox Square, a 55+ living community integrated into a larger single-family neighborhood, the goal is to create more than a place to live. It’s to create a place to belong.

The data tells a compelling story:
• 73% of adults 50+ want to remain in their communities as they age.
• 74% consider safe, accessible sidewalks important to their community.
• Nearly 1 in 4 adults 65+ living independently in their communities experience social isolation.

What typically happens?
Developments focus on housing types, amenities, and density.
But overlook the everyday connections that turn a collection of homes into a neighborhood.

What if you did this instead?
Design connection into the neighborhood from the beginning.
• Create walkable streets that encourage daily interaction.
• Integrate 55+ living into a broader neighborhood rather than separating generations.
• Make shared greens, gathering spaces, and pedestrian connections part of everyday life.
• Design homes around a community, not simply alongside one another.

At Arise Knox Square, we’re approaching neighborhood design with the understanding that the spaces between buildings can be just as valuable as the buildings themselves.

Because great neighborhoods don’t just create places to live. They create reasons to stay, relationships that last, and value that grows through belonging.

The Thomas Building

We love it. We design in it. We brought it back to life.

Two historic structures, dating to 1889 and 1901, formerly home to Harold’s Furniture, reimagined through adaptive reuse, thoughtful detailing, and a renewed purpose.

Today, the mixed-use building brings together two retail spaces, nine lofts, and two floors of studio space.

Most developments spread attention evenly.

Every building gets similar weight.
Every corner gets similar treatment.
Nothing becomes the place people remember.

What if you did this instead?

Create a few buildings that carry more meaning.

A chapel, town hall, corner café, pavilion at the end of a street, or a building that terminates a framed view.

These focal buildings create gravitational pull, giving people something to walk toward, gather around, photograph, and remember.

Traditional neighborhoods have understood this for generations.
Places like Alys Beach use architecture strategically, creating memorable anchors within the larger urban fabric rather than asking every building to compete for attention.

Because the buildings people remember help create the places people return to.

And places people return to tend to hold their value.

We’re honored to announce that The Square at Everlee has been recognized with an AIA Alabama Design Award.

At the heart of Everlee in Hoover, Alabama, The Square is envisioned as a contemporary village center rooted in the character of Southern Mercantile Architecture. Its light-filled clubhouse, articulated two-wing form, and terraced pool deck create a strong architectural presence while fostering connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Thoughtfully integrated amenities, landscaped gathering spaces, and pedestrian pathways connect Everlee’s diverse neighborhoods, creating a place where architecture, landscape, and community come together.

We’re proud to see this vision recognized by AIA Alabama and grateful to everyone who helped bring The Square at Everlee to life. Thank you AIA Alabama for the Merit Award!
