Mixing dark woods with light woods is one of the easiest ways to add texture, dimension, and real layered depth to a space. There’s this idea that you have to commit to one wood species or stain, but that’s not actually how good rooms work. You can absolutely mix and match, as long as the tones play nicely together.

White oak is a great example. It pairs beautifully with ashy browns, charcoal leaning stains, and even black. When the undertones align, the contrast feels intentional instead of chaotic, and the space ends up feeling richer and more collected rather than flat.

The living room lacked character, and the fireplace felt flat and disconnected from the space. To add dimension and depth, we bumped out the fireplace and stepped back built ins on either side to create a layered architectural moment. We used drywall to form soft arched cavities for the built ins, keeping the cabinetry itself simple and clean so the architecture could do the heavy lifting. Wallpaper lined the backs of the bookcases to add warmth and interest, paired with wall to wall floating shelves. The final step was thoughtful styling to bring everything together and make the room feel finished, intentional, and lived in.

Our sand and sage coastal primary bedroom vibes. We created a double board and batten accent wall painted in Gray Cashmere by Benjamin Moore, which is not gray at all. It’s a soft, beautiful green. Proof that coastal doesn’t have to mean blue. This room is all about warmth, texture, and calm with layered neutrals, gentle greens, and natural finishes that feel relaxed but intentional.

See how easy it is to get a soft coastal look without blues? We leaned into sandy tones and warm beiges, layered with soft greens on this Riverhead project. Calm, coastal, and not a navy stripe in sight. 😍

Soft coastal does not have to mean blue.

There is something quieter and more layered about bringing green into the mix. Think gentle sage instead of sea glass. Olive washed with sunlight. Soft eucalyptus against warm whites. It still feels coastal, just less obvious and more elevated.

Pair creamy whites with warm woods that feel natural, not overly finished. White oak, light walnut, rattan, woven textures. Let the materials do the talking. Linen drapery that puddles softly. Textured plaster. Honed stone. A mix of matte and tactile finishes that feel collected, not themed.

Green works beautifully here because it connects to landscape as much as shoreline. Dune grass. Bayberry. Moss on driftwood. It gives the space depth and calm without leaning into nautical clichés.

If you love coastal but want it to feel fresh and a little more grounded, start with green. Layer it with warm woods and natural textures. Keep the palette restrained and let the light be the star.

It is one of my favorite looks for a reason. It feels relaxed, timeless, and lived in without trying too hard.

Cabinets are and it’s Dove White in the perimeter and Serenity on the island.
