Travel: Why does a red facade look rich at 6 PM and flat at noon?

Low sun saturates warm colors and softens hard edges. The painted Casa de la Panadería on the Plaza Mayor proves it every single evening.

The lesson for home: terracotta, ochre and oxblood want warm, low light. Lamps, not overheads. Put the light low and the color comes alive.

Design: The New York City Apartment, the first room in my new Design Around the World series.

A prewar one-bedroom on Fifth Avenue, designed around a view across the Central Park Reservoir. Green velvet sofa facing the windows, a cognac leather reading chair in the corner, round Carrara marble coffee table, brass lamps at three heights and a faded vintage-style rug. Every one of the 14 pieces is shoppable on the post.

Why does a room still feel wrong after you've bought everything you love?

Usually it's the layout. Before I buy a single piece of furniture, I draw the room: measure every wall, window and door, draw it to scale, find the focal point and clear the walkways. On paper, mistakes cost nothing.

From my Design and the City Substack:

Travel: There is an hour in Madrid, just before the sun drops behind the Royal Palace, when the whole city turns the color of honey.

The granite warms. The Plaza Mayor glows like a terracotta pot left out in the sun. The trees in the Retiro go to gold leaf, and every fountain catches the last of it.

I planned whole days around that hour. Today's travel issue is the guide I wish I'd had.
