Cara first came to me with a colorful wildflower vision: loose, native-inspired florals, a semicircle arch, and long tables filled with flowers. Then she changed her mind. Version two became white, blue, and lavender, more refined and structured. The arch became a ground meadow, and long tables became round ones as we adjusted the design and budget.

Then she found her dress, and that changed everything. The final vision became completely white. No greenery, no color. Orchids, dahlias, ranunculus, and roses against the dark walnut walls of Kohl Mansion. The ceremony moved indoors, with two acrylic columns and a floating floral garland between them. The reception continued the same idea with transparent acrylic and white blooms against the dark wood.

The process wasn’t always easy, but when I saw everything together, I understood why we had gone through every version. Some weddings take a few tries to find themselves. This one was worth every one. 🤍

Walk into my studio on a Wednesday afternoon and you’ll notice it before you notice anything else.

Not perfume. Not a single flower you could point to. Something softer, more complicated. The kind of scent that takes a second to place and then stays with you.

Tuesday is processing day. That’s when the flowers arrive — Ecuadorian roses, ranunculus, hydrangeas, whatever the week calls for. We unpack everything, re-cut the stems, let them drink. Give them time to recover from the journey before they go into the cooler. Flowers need that. They’ve traveled far to get here.

By Wednesday, the ones we need first start rolling out. Cart by cart, bucket by bucket — flowers that have been quietly opening in the dark, drinking, gathering themselves for what’s coming.

And the studio fills with that scent.

We work in it all day and stop noticing it. That’s what happens when something becomes your normal. But the moment someone walks in from outside — a neighbor, a client stopping by — they stop mid-sentence. They breathe in. And they say: it smells so good in here.

Every single time.

That’s because every single stem in this room has been touched by hand. Unpacked, re-cut, conditioned, hydrated, checked. There is no shortcut in this part of the process — no stem gets skipped, no flower goes unnoticed. It’s why this work takes the time it takes. It’s why it costs what it costs. Every arrangement that leaves this studio started here, in a bucket, being cared for before anyone ever sees it.

A Forest They Could Walk Through

Whitney and Stephane didn’t want a wedding that looked like a wedding. They wanted to walk through a forest. To feel the meadow underfoot, the ferns brushing past, the lavender in the air. The flowers were never meant to be the focal point — the “feeling” was.

So we built it around that. Aisle meadows with alliums, wild grasses, bunny tails, and ferns laid along the ceremony path like something that had always been growing there. An arch in whimsical style, softened with lavender drapery. Lanterns on the tables wrapped in moss, grasses, and succulents — quiet, grounded, nothing competing for attention.

The one thing that surprised people? Whitney’s cascading bouquet, trailing asparagus plumosa all the way down. That same element — delicate, wild, a little unexpected — ran through everything we designed for her day.

And while the guests were celebrating, a live painter stood quietly to the side, capturing the arch in acrylic. That ceremony — the arch, the ferns, the couple standing inside it — exists now as a painting somewhere in their home.

Some weddings you remember for the flowers. This one you remember for how it felt to be inside it.

What Happens to Your Flowers After the Wedding?

I was loading out of a hotel ballroom at midnight, and there were hundreds of dollars worth of flowers with nowhere to go. The couple had already left. The guests were gone. And these blooms — still open, still beautiful — were headed for a trash bag.

I couldn’t do it.

So I started doing something else.

After events where flowers are left behind, my team separates the blooms from their mechanics and bundles them into arrangements. Then I make a call. I introduce myself simply — this is a florist, we have flowers from a wedding today, would you be able to accept them? Sometimes they say yes right away. Sometimes they ask which studio I’m from, and I tell them. But that’s never the point of the call.

The point is the flowers finding somewhere to go.

We deliver to three senior homes and a children’s hospital — all local, all in San Leandro and Oakland. Every delivery comes with a note that includes the couple’s names. Not mine. Because I’m not the hero of this story. The couple created the celebration that brought these flowers into the world. They deserve to be thanked for where those flowers end up.

If the facility wants to send a photo back to the couple, they send it to me and I pass it along. That small moment of connection — a stranger holding flowers that were part of someone’s most important day — is worth more than anything I could put into words.

Michelle and Zach’s ceremony arch was one of those builds that stops you when it’s finished. Claire de Lune peonies — open, vintage, almost translucent — garden roses, belladonnas, lisianthus, snowball, hydrangeas, dahlias, ranunculus, garden spray roses. A bright, abundant spring palette that felt almost too alive to be contained in one structure.

And it wasn’t.

After the ceremony, instead of breaking the arch down and loading it into the van, we did something different. We took it apart bloom by bloom, gathered everything into small hand-tied bouquets, and sent them home with the guests.

Every single stem from that arch found a new home that night.

I watched people carry them out — tucked under their arms, held carefully like something precious. Because they were. These weren’t leftover flowers. They were the same blooms that framed the moment Michelle and Zach said their vows, an hour earlier.

That’s the part that stays with me. Not the installation — the ending.

The first time I went to the San Francisco Flower Market was in 2010. I had just moved to the US, googled it, and convinced my husband to let me take our one car, promising I’d be back before he left for work.

I was so excited I could barely sleep the night before.

When I walked in, I didn’t know what to do with myself. The selection, the volume, flowers from Japan and Holland I had only seen in books. I went to Torchio Nursery Company and asked for flowers by their Latin names because I didn’t know the English ones yet. The guy looked at me like I was speaking another language.

I was.

Sixteen years later, the market means so much more than buying flowers. It’s where I see people I’ve known for years, trade containers, share installation tips, pass along leads, and hear the latest news.

It’s where I’ve met designers I deeply admire, like Gregor Lersch and Elly Lin, and exchanged ideas surrounded by buckets of flowers. And it’s where my reputation lives. The wholesalers know what I’m going to reject before I say a word. Sixteen years of standards will do that.

I still go myself. Every week.

Because every week is different. There’s always a new arrival, an unexpected variety, or a flower that wasn’t on my list but somehow ends up coming home with me.

People think going to the flower market is shopping. To me, it’s belonging somewhere.

Some mornings the alarm goes off at 4am and I think, really? Then I remember what’s waiting. The smell when I walk through those doors. Something new to discover. A conversation I didn’t know I needed.

Every single time, worth it. 🌸
