Last week was full of lots of wins, firsts and a couple of flops!

So grateful for the wonderful community Neighbourhood Pottery Studio has fostered and seeing all the brilliant work of my fellow members this weekend just passed was so inspiring!

Another recreation this time from my favourite Studio Ghibli film, Princess Mononoke. This was a request from a friend I was delighted to receive, and with the added challenge of recreating the indented foot.

How should I glaze this when it comes out of the bisque firing next week?

Playing with the floral stamps I bought during my visit to Mashiko (a stunning pottery town!) in December. Finding the balance between getting a strong impression and maintaining the pot's integrity was tricky but so satisfying to see the pattern emerge.

This pot was a test throw for a project and felt like the perfect test for these beautiful florals.

Trialling different techniques over the past year to try and play with what my style might develop into!

It's been a lot of fun playing with so many different shapes and designs and I am now finding myself torn between the want to continue playing and developing a style. Ultimately I think I will be continuing with both simultaneously and being more intentional with the trials I start. I just bought by own glazes for the first time, so naturally this will be my next test!

This first image is trialling underglaze painting and using fine needle tools.



And this is a test of my floral stamps I purchased during my visit to Mashiko. Using these to create indents in the clay that we're then filled with underglaze and a sheer glaze finish.

This was part of an experiment with mixing two clays together, a "not so" smooth black and buff clay to make it bearable to throw created this deep brown toned clay and only a few glazes reliably coat it!

A piece I made during my first hand-building lesson with , learning the basics of pinch pots, coiling and slab work. This piece is a mix of the latter two.

Not so much an experiment but an attempt at refining my mug skills. This was imo the perfect mug, until I dropped it about 2 seconds after this photo πŸ₯²

Another bottle collaring experiment! And also my attempt at seeing how the studio glazes (which notoriously don't blend or run) might merge if I pushed the limits of thickness (no kiln shelves were harmed in the process!)

This bowl is a recreation from Ash*taka's bowl in Princess Mononoke. Practicing creating things from existing shapes helps me be intentional with my dimensions, pulling and finishing.

I prefer to throw thin pieces, but that leaves little space for scraffito and carving. Both of which are fun and playful techniques! I've made more space for them since this test.

And finally, mimicking a finish from an oxide by brushing dip glazes. I also left the handle of this piece unglazed which I don't know that I liked in the end.

From thrown pots, to trimmed, bisque fired and each glazed.

Bottle forms are one that I struggled with so these three pieces where practices for an oil bottle for my brother. I threw them before buying the pouring attachment and two do the three fit snuggly. So the first (green and white) is destined to be a bud vase instead.

Throwback to last Friday πŸ˜… I had previously had two very successful throwing sessions. So it was only natural that a dud day was coming for me. I normally aim to throw 5-10 pieces (depending on size), but I was cursed with over throwing, heavy lifting and generally forgetting how to pot...

Away from the wheel this week and itching to get back on it!
