Sophie Jacobsen created an installation called ‘Disco Aperitivo’ – tableware paying homage to 1970s Italian disco glamour. When Sophie was viewing potential spaces for this launch, an apartment already adorned with Nuvolette wallpaper felt like the perfect choice. ‘Fornasetti embodies the very best of sophisticated maximalism, something Italian design is so capable of capturing, which resonates deeply with my personal taste and design ethos’, Sophie explains.

Cole & Son has long been a collaborator with the Italian atelier. Each design within the shared canon involves a process of deep translation – a genuine dialogue between two houses whose commitment to craft, detail, and the decorative arts is equally nuanced.

Hand-Painted Leopard has been entirely redrawn by hand in the Cole & Son studio, referencing a stylized leopard print with an organic sense of movement. The design has been printed using a screen-print technique to imbue a disruptive spirit and keep the hand of the artwork as faithful as possible.

Colourings offer an unexpected take on more traditional leopard print; in tones of Rose & Tangerine, Moss & Mauve, Sand & Violet, Grey & Metallic Silver, and Petrol & Teal to blur the line between abstract mark-making and the representation of fur.

Animal print has been used by the Vivienne Westwood house for over four decades in bold, subversive interpretations. Leopard print was oversized and magnified in the Spring-Summer 1989 Civilizade collection and later found in bright red tones in Autumn-Winter 1992/93 Always On Camera. Vivienne famously enjoyed using the prints in any way other than how they are found in nature.

For previous collections, Ardmore ceramic pieces have informed the wallpaper designs, though, Baobab was born in London and has since inspired new ceramics, unveiled during the Baobab Exhibition.

In celebration of this ‘Design Meets Art’ wallpaper collection, paying homage to South Africa’s majestic Baobab tree. Full of mysticism and lore, the Baobab is affectionately known as the ‘Tree of Life’. Said to have healing properties, the tree acts as a symbol for the vibrant flora and fauna of South Africa; a distinctive figure in the landscape to which all creatures are drawn.

In this collaboration collection, the design houses of Cole & Son and Ardmore ceramics have continued to elevate their offering. Wallcoverings are vastly detailed and immersive, akin to the rich nature that surrounds Ardmore’s home within the Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Fanciful and joyful, each of the collection’s nine designs is bursting with life. Regal King Cheetahs prowl through the long grasses of the plain; a family of giraffes share a fleeting moment of maternal love amidst acacia leaves; and whimsical big cats enjoy a vibrant landscape of waterfalls and pools.

The Tree of Life has been an endless source of inspiration for both ateliers, with all the collection’s designs borne of the Baobab. This fantastical panel celebrates the fruits, flowers, and vibrant ecosystem of South Africa, embodying a rich narrative of nature throughout the seasons.

Artists from both design houses hand-painted the ornamented fauna within this expansive tableau; the distinctive Cole & Son hand blending seamlessly alongside Ardmore’s characteristic style. This was a true mesh between both the design houses, a labour of love.

Leopard Walk was originally painted by Punch Shabalala, one of Ardmore’s most esteemed artists. The design has a striking simplicity, depicting a parade of leopards across the wall. Safari on Taupe, seen here, brings together the unfussy hues, form, and natural textures seen throughout this space.

The brief was to create a space that is dark, yet cosy — Liz Carroll Interiors brought this sitting room to life through bold pattern and confident colour. Savuti’s Bright Multi on Dark Viridian palette works in perfect harmony with the surrounding rich hues, eloquently adding depth to the space through the design’s charming African garden.

Nuvolette is an incredibly versatile design, presented in understated colourways creating endless movement across this enchanting design. The sky was long a recurring vision for Fornasetti and these “little clouds” are delicately detailed etchings depicting rolling skies.
