One of Cole & Son’s oldest designs, Jaspe has an enduring, refined air of elegance. Historically produced by hand at the Cole & Son factory in north London with a brush effect, the design has been modernised and placed in a large stripe repeat to create a balanced, yet seemingly irregular strié in a wide range of sophisticated colourings.

Pattern books from Cole & Son’s archive show how Jaspe effects were utilised. Here we see a Jaspe paper with solid stripe printed on top; within the pattern book there was coordinating borders alongside the stripes to suggest how the paper may be styled.

Our Story — Part Two: John Perry the Wallpaper Pioneer

John Perry was a pioneer within the wallpaper industry. He experimented with different printing techniques to achieve a variety finishes and textures. Most notably, block prints that imitated silks, the use of horse hair brushes to create soft striés, and incorporating a crushed pearl pigment within the inks to give a soft, mica sheen. All of these textures are still used within Cole & Son’s portfolio of designs today.

‘Perry Wallpapers’ refers to the man considered as Cole & Son’s founder, John Perry. In a vibrant hub of more than 190 block printing companies active during the 18th and 19th centuries, Perry began carving a name out for himself as a master craftsman and innovator. John Perry’s artisanal legacy still sits at the heart of Cole & Son portfolio today. 

Archival surface print rollers show how Cole & Son developed from master block printers to embrace new technology during the Industrial Revolution. These rollers allowed for continuous printing, seeing wallpaper production increase significantly. 

They now sit as an essential part of our archive, allowing Cole & Son to keep the magic of early print techniques alive. 

Cole & Son’s first factory was in Offord Road, Islington. Here we see one of the many block printers hand-printing designs.

The design Hummingbirds is over 300 years old, yet it still feels current and relevant to interiors of today. That is the magic of Coles, designs that last for centuries to come. 

This image of Hummingbirds is of the original block, which would have been carved into fruit woods, such as pearwood. 

By the 20th century, A.P. Cole, proprietor of Cole & Son (Wallpapers) Ltd, had taken on John Perry’s archive and factory, with the brand’s showroom located on aristocratic Mortimer Street in central London.

Cole & Son has been documenting each sale of wallpaper since the beginning of its conception – beginning with Perry’s documentation, spanning to innumerable Coles log books. 

This has been an incredible wealth of knowledge for the current Cole & Son design house team – when delving into our rich archives – to ensure the future design direction is in alignment with our past.

These archival pans are a fascinating example of the developmental craft John Perry pioneered – this was how we created our stripes. The pans displayed had varying widths depending on the stripe style. Ink would be poured into small wells at the top and the paper would then be pulled through, leaving the perfect striped design behind.
