I’ve not shared any of my remakes in a while! Due to current circumstances my own studio practice has really slowed down (it was already purposefully slow!!) and I’ve been learning a lot about patience and adaptability. My making practice has become seemingly more scattered through time and space. But the benefits of this approach is that the spaciousness allows for different ideas and creativity to permeate the transmuting material process.

Since last year I’ve been working on a small collection of reworked French antique linen workwear with
Eelke has been collecting these vintage pieces for some time, found in local second hand markets and even at the dump. They are loom woven linen made entirely by hand with also intricate repair work and embroidered initials of the wearer/original maker. For me this fabric has an aliveness and flows through my sewing machine with such ease.

“I collect these vintage and antique French linens as they are increasingly becoming rare and the quality is exceptional. I love giving these beautiful textiles a new lease of life and transforming them into timeless clothing pieces through collaboration and shared creativity” Eelke

Renewed pieces now available in store (bricks n mortar) at:
Fabrications, 7 Broadway Market, Hackney E8 4PH.
Open: Wednesday - Sunday, 11am - 5:30pm.

Hope to see you on Broadway!

Hello May!
This month we welcome back from her travels in Peru, where she has been teaching Peruvian hand embroidery and continuing her tour.

We are looking forward to seeing Bella again and hosting her monthly

🧵 All beginners, intermediate and advanced stitchers will have the opportunity to learn, develop and progress your own projects with Bella’s guidance.

🧵 If you don’t yet have a personal embroidery project, Bella has an introductory activity where you can select and needlework a mini stitch ‘sampler’ inspired by the natural greenery foliages, plants and flowers around us whilst learning some key hand embroidery stitches and top tips!

🧵 Returning Embroidery Clubbers can learn more embroidery stitches on your existing ‘sampler’ from your first session and / or get advice and work on your own personal embroidery project.

🧵 Dates: For now - Thursday 14th May, 11th June, 9th July, 6 - 9pm (book 1 or attend regularly)

🧵 Where: Fabrications “ReImaginerium” studio, 7 Broadway Market, Hackney E8 5PH

Had SEW much fun teaching these lovely ladies on this month’s Beginners Sewing Course!
Over 3 Wednesday evenings they went from no sewing experience to understanding how to set up and use a sewing machine with confidence to making some prized items to take away! So proud of them!
There were lots of “learning opportunities” along the way and abiding by our studio moto:
✂️ “I’ve learnt so much from my mistakes, I’m thinking of making a few more” ✂️
This month saw a ReSourcefull circular moment too as I made fabric from previous courses student’s test runs and my demo swatches that became cute tote bags on the last evening!

Next Beginners Sewing Course (over 3 eves) opens on Wednesday 8th April, 6:30 - 9:30pm.

Week 2 n I c e c l O u t

“Clout” being an old term for patch, and when you have clout, you have power. I present my walking armour! I’ve been patching up these jeans for over 15 years now, each patch having its own story, memory logged that has created inner and outer renewal.

- “No Logo” inspired by the influencial book by I bought this patch at the Art Car Boot Fair from

- A gifted hankerchief from a Japanese journalist who interviewed me during the London Olympics.

- Traces of teaching myself freestyle machine embroidery and Sashiko stitching

- fabric swatches gifted by when we were running the Upcycling Academy

- threads 💙

What memories do your patched up clothes have to share?

It’s and a BIG THANK YOU to our dear host Kate Sekules for over 10 years of service - what an achieveMend!
This year’s see a twist with - a weekly prompt alongside the daily ones. Historically I’ve been a devotee to the daily prompts, but this year circumstances have intervened and I’m just about baby walking my way through!
But in the spirit of mending, what gets worn, damaged and torn apart be it physical, psychological, emotional can be stitched back together, renewed and transformed.
I’ve gathered my mending pile together and I’m holding it together. Mends will be a bit messy, practical, quick fixes to get these well worn (and repaired) items up on their feet again!

As always I’m grateful and inspired by all the care and repair taking place across the globe - visible and invisible.

How’s your and ?

I’ve been inspired by series celebrating , so I thought I’d share some of Fabrications repair heroes too!

Starting with 🧵✨Jenny Caminada ✨🧵

Also known as Jenny has been teaching sewing, making quilts and repairing sewing machines since 2010.
Fun Fact: half way through the Lockdown, Jenny had repaired over 100 sewing machines in the Walthamstow area, helping local sewers to make scrubs, face masks and keep hands, hearts and minds focussed and calm.

Jenny taught me how to service Fabrications classroom machines to keep them working smoothly during all our sewing classes.
We also have hosted Jenny’s “How to service & repair your own sewing machine” class - a super practical, empowering and fun session guiding you through the basics of care, maintenance, where to oil, resolving tension issues to ensure your machine keeps on purring! All brands, vintage & modern sewing machines can be brought along. Next date is fast approaching and still has a few places available!

One Week to go! Until our “Patcha Kucha” Mending Party to celebrate London Repair Week

Many of us may have heard or been to a night - A Japanese, story telling format, Inspired by the idea to “talk less, show more”, enabling creatives to show their work over 20 slides for 20 seconds per slide. But have you been to a Pecha Kucha mending party before?? AKA “Patcha Kucha” 😆

Our guest designers will present their work and demostrate a “Quick Fix” mending technique for 15 mins (give or take - it will be fluid!) At the end of the presentations, choose one of the techniques that inspired you and try out on an item of your own clothing in need of some TLC!

All levels of sewist or non sewist welcomed!

I will be focussing on buttons - how to re stitch, strengthen to avoid loosing as well as some decorative and restyling ideas using buttons.

Emma Matthews will show basic darning to put a stitch in time to save nine of your beloved socks. (Each of Emma’s Socko socks include a simple darning kit, which we sell at Fabrications incase you’re wondering!)

Rob Jones will demonstrate a “Nami Nui” running stitch on a raw edge reverse applique fabric patch. Nami Nui is the simplest, functional and decorative stitching technique used in traditional Japanese mending.

🗓️ Thursday 5th March
🕰️ 6:30 - 9:30pm
📍 Fabrications ‘ReImaginerium’ studio, 7 Broadway Market, Hackney E8 4PH
💷 £12.50 - includes refreshments & mending supplies.
