A replacement that blends convincingly under the lamp can read brighter, cooler or cleaner than the rest of the set in a daylit room, because the original components carry years of handling, cleaning and fading that no new part shares. The reverse also applies: a tube chosen under lamplight alone can look heavy or flat when the fitting is unlit and the window is doing the lighting.

Practical guidance: assess the fitting in both states before the specification is agreed. Look at the tubes unlit in the room's own daylight, from the positions the room is actually used from, and note how much of the visible surface is direct reflection from the window and how much is ambient. Then look again with the fitting lit at its intended level. Where a fitting sits in strong daylight for much of the day, that condition deserves more weight in the finish decision than a workshop or evening viewing. On a rise-and-fall fitting, the Candle Tube is specified for a fitting that never holds one position.

Penny's Daily Blog looks at rise-and-fall and adjustable-height fittings: pendant and table fittings carried on a mechanism that raises and lowers the shade and lamp assembly through a range of heights. The Candle Tube travels with the moving assembly, so its relationship to the shade, the lampholder and the room changes each time the height is altered.

This changes how a replacement should be judged. A tube checked only at the fitting's current height has been checked against one frame of many: at the lowest position the shade may sit closer to the furniture and the exposed length reads shorter from a standing eye, and at the highest position more of the tube shows and the lampholder may appear below the shade's rim from a low angle. A tube that reads correctly at one setting can sit out of proportion at another.

Where the mechanism is still working, check the tube's appearance at both extremes of the mechanism's travel, lit, before the specification is agreed: the exposed length below the shade's rim at each setting, the clearance between the tube and the shade's hardware as the assembly moves, and whether the tube sits true through the full range rather than only at rest. Where the mechanism is stiff or rarely adjusted, agree the specification for the height the fitting actually occupies, and note the setting in writing so the fitting is assessed from the same position on future visits.

On a two-tier fitting, a Candle Tube is seen twice from every angle in the room.

A replacement Candle Tube is often judged on its own. On a pair of matching fittings, it is judged side by side.

Two table lamps either side of a bed or sofa, a pair of wall lights flanking a mirror, a chandelier with matching wall lights from the same scheme: where two fittings of the same design share a room, the eye reads their Candle Tubes together, and a small difference in profile, height or finish between the two stands out in a way it never would on a single fitting.

Where one of a pair is being replaced, it is worth specifying both tubes against one reference rather than ordering the replacement separately. The surviving partner is the best guide to what the new part has to match, so keep it in place until the new tube is confirmed.

From a seated height, a shaded fitting reads differently.

A standing eye looks down on a table or floor lamp, so the shade's lower rim appears to cut across the Candle Tube high on its length. Sit down in the chair the room is actually used from and the line of sight flattens: more or less of the tube shows, the rim crosses it at a different point, and the transition between the exposed section and the hidden section moves with every change of viewpoint.

Because a fitting is most often seen by someone sitting down, that is the height worth specifying against. What the room sees through a diffuser is not the tube's surface.

On many fittings the shade is not the last element between the lamp and the space: an internal diffuser, an opal glass bowl or a glass shade can sit between the lamp and the outer shade. Where a Candle Tube stands behind that layer, its edges are softened, its finish reads faintly, and what registers is the tube's silhouette rather than its detail.

Before a replacement Candle Tube is confirmed, look at the fitting lit, from the height and distance it is normally seen. The reveal is not always level.

On some fittings a shade does not sit square to the lamp: an adjustable shade tilted to throw reading light, a raked shade carried on an inclined arm, or a shade that has eased out of level over years of use. Where a Candle Tube stands beneath a tilted shade, the exposed length reads differently on each side of the fitting, and the section of tube a specification intended to show can change from one side to the other.
