For a little while, I had been experiencing an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach, but it was never bad enough for me to really worry about it. I carried on as normal, thinking it would pass.
Then I developed a kidney infection. After a course of antibiotics, it still hadn’t completely cleared, and before long I was in excruciating pain. I went to A&E, where they sent me for a CT scan.
That scan changed everything.
They had found a mass.
It was a huge shock and an incredibly worrying time.
Suddenly, there were so many questions and very few answers. I was put onto the NHS two-week wait pathway, and the NHS were fantastic in getting me seen, having further blood tests and arranging a biopsy.
And then came the hardest part…
The waiting.
The biopsy had to be sent to The Royal Marsden, and after four very long weeks of waiting, we finally got the diagnosis.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
It turned out that it wasn’t just the mass. The cancer was also in my lymph nodes.
I came up to the Wonky family over Christmas. It was lovely to be surrounded by people I love, but underneath it all was the worry of not knowing exactly what the future was going to look like. I knew chemotherapy was coming, but I didn’t really know what that meant for me.
Then my cancer nurse called and talked me through everything.
Eight rounds of chemotherapy.
A whole day in hospital every three weeks.
It sounded like a long road ahead.
Throughout my treatment, the Macmillan nurses were incredible.
Every time I went into hospital, they were there.
They were someone I could talk to, someone who could answer questions, guide me through things I didn’t understand and simply be there when I needed them.
They also helped me access funding towards a wig, and even the little things — a cup of tea, a coffee, a friendly face and someone who understood — made such a difference.
I now know that my cancer isn’t something that can be cured. It’s something I will live with from now on.
But life is moving forward.
I’ve been able to return to work.
I’ve had the absolute joy of getting our very own puppy, Narla 🐶,
and I’m slowly getting back to feeling somewhat normal again.
My journey has changed me, but it has also shown me just how important organisations like Macmillan are to people and families going through cancer.
