A miniature portrait in pile.

The Old Painter (Naqqāsh-e Pir) a small Tabriz rug after a celebrated painting by Iranian realist Abbas Katouzian. Finely woven and extensively hand-carved, with sculpted pile bringing remarkable depth to the sitter’s beard, face and clothing.

A remarkable little example of the virtuosity of Iranian pictorial weaving.

A rare Qajar pictorial Kashan, likely Mohtasham school, depicting the Sufi figure Nūr ʿAlī Shāh.

What makes this piece especially compelling is the inscriptional border, which identifies the central image and frames it as a protective devotional portrait. A working translation of the verse reads:

“Whoever beholds your image upon this small carpet is delivered from the troubles of the world, safe from the evil eye, and sheltered beneath the protection of the saintly Shah.”

The rug is both portrait and talisman: a finely woven devotional image where poetry, protection, and Sufi reverence are brought together in fine wool.

From Angkor to the loom.

The same visual language carved in stone centuries ago continues today in Cambodian hol (ikat), where patterns are dyed into silk before weaving.

Apsaras, once etched into temple walls, reappear in thread. Seen up close, the continuity feels immediate.

Techniques nearly lost during the Khmer Rouge genocide are now being preserved and passed on at places like the Institute for Khmer Traditional Textiles.

Opening tomorrow: Paper Trail by Lin Qiqing

A Brooklyn-based textile artist working at the intersection of weaving, paper, and memory, Lin Qiqing creates deeply tactile works that explore migration, identity, and cultural inheritance.

Her practice moves fluidly between handwoven textiles and paper, often incorporating plant dyes and collage to build layered, skin-like surfaces shaped through time and touch.

Lin received her MFA in Textiles from Parsons School of Design and brings a background in journalism that informs the narrative sensitivity of her work.

Her work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum and Art League Houston, with residencies including the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, New York Foundation for the Arts, and Residency Unlimited.

Join us tomorrow for an artist Q + A with Qiqing, with her work presented alongside selections from our collection.

Lac-dyed crimson field with elegant palmettes and flowing vines, framed by a luminous turquoise border with beautiful abrash, shifting at moments into soft purple.

Handspun Churro wool dyed with wild marigold, cochineal, and pomegranate.

In Raíces, Omar Chasan moves beyond traditional geometric iconography into a more intuitive language of form. Flowing, organic shapes evoke roots spreading beneath the surface as an expression of the importance of knowing where we come from in order to grow and expand.

The soft gray tones are rare shades of undyed Churro wool that Omar patiently saved over two years to incorporate into a work like this, grounding the piece in the natural beauty and character of the fiber itself.
