The irregularities, the imperfections, the evidence of the human hand. These are often the qualities that make an object most compelling to me.

Many thanks to Ivan Soenderholm of Jozan Magazine for the thoughtful profile and the opportunity to reflect on my journey, from growing up around my family’s antique business to building Heirloom in Brooklyn and my involvement with the Hajji Baba Club.

We touched on collecting, the evolution of taste, the stories objects carry, and the importance of sharing our knowledge and enthusiasm with the next generation.

I’ve been surrounded by these objects my whole life, and my curiosity has only grown. Still so much to learn and discover!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of Elongating Time by Shradha Kochhar for ‘Contemporary @ Heirloom’, and a special thank you to Shradha for trusting us with this beautiful and thoughtful body of work.

While installing the exhibition, something remarkable happened. As we were hanging a work whose abstraction called to mind a dive-bombing bird, a tiny chartreuse warbler flew into the gallery over my shoulder. In the midst of its fall migration through New York, it somehow found its way into Heirloom perhaps momentarily drawn to the saturated colors filling the space. Shradha, Shara, and I watched as it traveled through the gallery before I gently caught it in my hands and released it outside to continue its journey south.

A fleeting and strangely perfect moment that has already become part of our memory of the exhibition.

Elongating Time is now on view at Heirloom, 81 Grand Street, Brooklyn.

✨ We’re thrilled to announce our next featured textile artist, Shradha Kochhar ✨

Shradha Kochhar (b. Delhi, India) is a Brooklyn-based artist whose hand-spun and hand-knitted khadi sculptures explore material memory, tactile histories, and intergenerational dialogue. Working with indigenous Indian Kala cotton, she spins the fiber by hand on a charkha and transforms it into sculptural forms.

Her work functions as a physical archive, exploring South Asian histories of women’s labor, memory, cotton, community, and colonization through cloth.

For Elongating Time, Kochhar will present new work at Heirloom bringing her practice into dialogue with antique textiles and the long histories of handwork, material knowledge, and memory they carry.

An MFA graduate of Parsons and former Museum of Arts and Design artist fellow, Kochhar has exhibited internationally and been featured in The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Vogue, Selvedge, Harper’s Bazaar, and Crafts Magazine.

A miniature portrait in pile.

The Old Painter (Naqqāsh-e Pir) a small Tabriz rug after a celebrated painting by Iranian realist Abbas Katouzian. Finely woven and extensively hand-carved, with sculpted pile bringing remarkable depth to the sitter’s beard, face and clothing.

A remarkable little example of the virtuosity of Iranian pictorial weaving.

Each spring we find each other again in a room full of wool, silk, and stories. The Santa Ynez Carpet & Textile Forum is where a global community gathers to chew the warps and wefts, trade knowledge, and remember why we fell into this beautiful obsession. 🌍🪢

A rare Qajar pictorial Kashan, likely Mohtasham school, depicting the Sufi figure Nūr ʿAlī Shāh.

What makes this piece especially compelling is the inscriptional border, which identifies the central image and frames it as a protective devotional portrait. A working translation of the verse reads:

“Whoever beholds your image upon this small carpet is delivered from the troubles of the world, safe from the evil eye, and sheltered beneath the protection of the saintly Shah.”

The rug is both portrait and talisman: a finely woven devotional image where poetry, protection, and Sufi reverence are brought together in fine wool.

From Angkor to the loom.

The same visual language carved in stone centuries ago continues today in Cambodian hol (ikat), where patterns are dyed into silk before weaving.

Apsaras, once etched into temple walls, reappear in thread. Seen up close, the continuity feels immediate.

Techniques nearly lost during the Khmer Rouge genocide are now being preserved and passed on at places like the Institute for Khmer Traditional Textiles.
