MEET THE MAKER: Trish Vaughan of Southpaw Designs

“I am excited to be exhibiting at the FXBG Pottery Throwdown in November. My ceramics range from functional pieces to purely decorative forms. I am fascinated by the ability of clay to take on new life—from a raw, malleable material to a permanent, beautiful object from wheel throwing and hand-building. My forms are often inspired by the fluid shapes found in nature, such as water, landscapes, plant life and also modern graphics. Glazing is a crucial part of my creative process, where I approach the surface as a canvas. I layer and blend glazes to achieve a sense of depth and movement. I also enjoy watercolor and acrylic painting when clay is not beckoning me to dig in, get muddy and play.”

MEET THE MAKER: Trista Chapman

“My 4,000 square foot studio allows me to equip the space with all the tools that I need to make any type of work I choose. Currently I am working with low-fire earthenware clay and a large palette of underglaze colors. I use the potter’s wheel primarily, with a good degree of mold work. This includes press-molding with slabs and casting. A lot of my work is then assembled by stacking parts and adding feet as well as playful k***s and handles. My work has evolved from a simple approach to a more layered and complicated process involving sgraffito and painting, both free form and deliberate. I have a whimsical approach to both form and surface treatments, yet my work still remains primarily functional.

When you first see my work, the forms of the pieces are obvious in their function, yet there is an innocent playfulness about them. The surface looks very colorful and busy but upon a closer look, you can see layers with checkerboard pattern and hidden sgraffito symbols. These symbols are communication signals used between drifters and hobos during the Great Depression. Most of the symbols are from the United States, but some are European. I am looking to add more international symbols to communicate to a more global audience. In addition to these symbols, I try mainly to appeal to people with a playful, light hearted, happy approach to my work so that you get a positive and good feeling. I like to think that my work makes people smile. And everyone can relate to that.”

MEET THE MAKER: D.D. Lecky

“Clay is magical. It’s a humble substance but capable of preserving a record of time and culture. I think about this a lot when I make my pots. It’s why I press leaves into the surfaces. I’m making modern fossils that preserve the memory of an ephemeral thing that is only meant to last for a moment. In the clay though it remains, covered in glass, for the rest of time, a vessel for your favorite dinner or your morning tea.”

MEET THE MAKER: Lauren Braney

“My ideas and process are driven by memories and experiences of everyday life. Throughout life, I feel we all make connections which eventually can pass us by. I try to capture these personal moments through the imagery on my work. The subject of my hand-drawn transfers develops from my love for the outdoors; whether it’s discovering wildflowers on a hike, plants within my home or paddling down the river. Each surface featured on my work represents a pause from these experiences from which each moment is valued. My
simplified nature drawings became an integral part in the process to bring my functional pots to life. I strive to make functional work that brings outdoor imagery into the home.”

MEET THE MAKERS: Tiffany Yates & Sarah Hanson

Meet ceramic artists Tiffany Yates and Sarah Hanson, sharing a tent at this year’s market!

Tiffany Yates is a maker, ceramist, and illustrator working out of Studio 23 at LibertyTown Arts Workshop. Her practice draws inspiration from medical and biological sciences, blending anatomy, biology, and humor to highlight the beauty, oddity, and wonder of the natural world.

Sarah Hanson is an architect and potter based right here in Fredericksburg. Bringing her structural eye to clay, she crafts functional pieces featuring sgraffito—carving through layers of slip to create intricate patterns and images meant to be enjoyed every day.
