MEET THE MAKER: Sperlazza Pottery

“Sperlazza Pottery is handmade bright functional pottery for your home, kitchen and everyday life. I make each piece by hand, then layer the surface with brightly colored slips and glazes. The patterns are made by screen printing slips onto newsprint then building up layers of color, I transfer the image onto the clay in a monoprinting fashion. I love bringing bright colors and bold patterns to traditional functional pottery. All my items are made to be used over and over in your everyday life and home.”

“I’ve always loved art, I migrated through various media until first studying ceramics at Mary Washington College. Melding inspiration from my travels in Korea and my immersion in the American pottery tradition, my work centers around wheel thrown functional stoneware that seeks to bridge the gaps between clean lines and organic shapes, rustic and refined, form and function.”

MEET THE MAKER: Corgi Clay

Meet ceramic artist Deb Balestreri, owner and operator of Corgi Clay Art Center!

“My work in clay spans both functional pottery and figurative sculpture, united by a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, material, and the human experience. My pottery draws inspiration from classic Eastern and Western historical traditions, blending timeless forms with contemporary surface design. Function remains at the heart of my process; I create pieces intended to be handled, used, and integrated into daily life. Through thoughtful attention to color, texture, and form, I seek to elevate everyday rituals and foster a meaningful connection between object and user.

Alongside my functional work, my sculptural practice explores contemplative themes through the figure, often reflecting on identity, emotion, memory, and the quiet complexities of being human. While much of my sculpture carries a reflective and introspective quality, I also embrace whimsy as an essential part of my creative process. Playful forms, unexpected characters, and lighthearted narratives provide a counterbalance to more serious subject matter, allowing curiosity and imagination to guide the work in new directions. Together, these two bodies of work reflect my ongoing fascination with clay’s ability to communicate both utility and meaning.”
