Why Does Uranium Glass Glow?

One of the questions we hear most often at the Fredericksburg Antique Mall is…

“Is that REALLY radioactive?”

The answer is yes… but only very slightly!

Beginning in the 1830s, glassmakers added a tiny amount of uranium oxide to molten glass to create beautiful shades of green, yellow, and amber.

🔦 When a blacklight shines on uranium glass, the uranium reacts to the UV light and produces that amazing neon green glow through a process called fluorescence.

💚 Here’s something many people don’t know…

Not all green glass is uranium glass! Many green pieces won’t glow because they contain no uranium.

Today, uranium glass remains one of the most fascinating collectibles because it combines history, science, artistry, and just a little mystery.
