Eight years ago, Jeremiah Community was just an idea in the hearts of a group of downtown churches. Next month, over the course of 72 hours, it will become something you can visit, see and touch.

The week of Sept. 7, watch our prototype home go up live online, thanks to the expert planning of Atlantic Builders in cooperation with HomeAid National Capital Region. Then make plans to join us on Sept. 13 for an open-house to tour the home at The Oberle Academy .

One hands-on way our volunteers help move people from the street into housing is by outfitting rooms at Hesed House–Micah’s transitional supportive housing property–when rooms become available. We provide all-new bedding, kitchenware and other items in these rooms to ensure this transition is done with as much dignity as possible.

We welcome individuals, families and church groups who want to get involved with this or other aspects of this work. Here are the words of Clay Murray, a Micah board member who recently turned over a room with his family:

ā€œWhile the work is easy (collecting some fresh household items, then a little cleaning and set up), it is so incredibly heartwarming to know what's really going on: One neighbor is taking their next step into permanent housing and we are getting ready to welcome another neighbor off the street into a space where they can begin anew -- feeling the safety of four walls and a roof, re-learning how to take care of a home, exploring employment opportunities, ensuring they have the services they need, and being surrounded by the volunteers and staff at Micah who walk this bridge alongside them every step of the way.ā€

Clayā€˜s work (with his wife and daughter to help) is part of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church’s commitment to helping refresh these rooms. We are thankful for the many other churches who also take turns outfitting rooms on a rotating schedule. These include Fredericksburg Baptist Church , The Presbyterian Church Fredericksburg, Trinity Episcopal Church, St. George's Episcopal Church - Fredericksburg, St. Mary Fredericksburg, VA and Christ Lutheran Church-Fredericksburg, VA.

We’ll share more about our Let’s Do Good Day, but right now I just want to take a minute to brag on this team.

When we asked who wanted to spend a day volunteering together, every single hand went up.

And today they showed up. With energy. With laughter. With kindness. Ready to work, get dirty, get wet, haul some truly ridiculous stuff out of the river…and do some good together.

I wish everyone could know this crew the way I get to know them. They are funny and interesting and hardworking and genuinely good humans. They make our stores better, but more importantly, I’m certain our community is better because they’re in it.

I don’t know…are all business owners this lucky?

Because I feel pretty damn lucky.

I’m so proud of this team. ā¤ļø

And judging by this photo…we left the river a little better than we found it.

Every great adventure starts at a trailhead.

It’s where you gather a map, ask questions, swap stories, and get excited about what’s around the next bend.

So…we built one.

Welcome to The Trailhead - River Rock’s newest community space.

Part free library.
Part community board.
Part trip-planning station.
All about building adventure together.

Need inspiration for your next hike? Grab a guidebook. Looking for a new trail? Take a map. Want to slow down for a few minutes and dream about your next adventure? Pull up a chair.

Now we’d love your help filling the shelves.

Have trail maps, hiking guides, outdoor books, or adventure magazines you’ve finished enjoying? Bring them by! Someone else’s next adventure might begin with something that’s been sitting on your bookshelf.

And if you’re feeling inspired, tuck a little note inside.

ā¤ļø Your favorite trail.
šŸ˜‚ A funny backpacking story.
ā›°ļø A lesson learned.
🌲 A few words of encouragement for the next adventurer who picks it up.

The Trailhead has a story of its own, too.

With the exception of the wheels, it was built entirely from reclaimed materials. The cabinet once lived in my laundry room. The roof was made from old tin from Amie’s garden beds. Bob (Amie’s incredibly talented husband) handcrafted the table from reclaimed hand-hewn white oak.

What was once a collection of well-loved pieces now has a new purpose just like the books and maps we hope will fill it.

This is our gift to our community.

We’ll be hosting a small ribbon-cutting once we find the perfect home for it in the store and get it stocked with its first treasures. Until then, feel free to start dropping off books and maps at either River Rock location.

We can’t wait to watch this little Trailhead grow.

Thank you, Amie and Bob, for bringing one of my crazy ideas to life. ā¤ļø

Here’s to recycling adventure, sharing stories, and helping someone discover where their trail begins.
