PLEASE READ, GIVE US A FOLLOW + SAVE

Well Instagram has let me down again, and removed most of the captions from these beautiful photos before posting to facebook. They were so important and integral to the post and seemingly there's no way of editing them right now. So here they are for each photo in turn:

1) Every purchase we make impacts the world around us. Hello, I'm Paula, the founder of BRITISH design BRITISH made...

2) ...it's 14 years since I opened this lovely shop on Battle High Street...

3) ...helping you to buy beautiful, useful and sustainable things made here in the British Isles...

4) ...where wages and working conditions are regulated - and no adult or child has made your purchases for a meagre living.

5) Our carefully curated collection is made with sustainable or recycled materials where possible...

6) ...some are vintage or pre-loved...

7) ...none have travelled thousands of miles to get here (and the emissions and pollution that entails).

8) We avoid plastics, unsustainable fabrics, palm oil, soya and anything tested on animals...

9) ...and actively help to promote a healthier environment for the bees, birds and butterflies - us humans too.

10) So, if you care about the environment and want to make considered purchases, give us a follow and save this post.

the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this week, the pinnacle of the gardening world. I've been twice now and would love to go again. Have you been? It's best early in the morning, before the crowds and when you can hear the Parakeets squawking and zipping between the towering plane trees that line the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Did you know that one of its most famous quirks is that garden gnomes were strictly banned from the showgrounds for nearly a century to protect the show's formal aesthetic?
..and yes, we have been asked for British made garden gnomes, and no, we STILL don't have any. But we do have a great selection of beautifully made useful items for your garden, and organic garden seed.

The exhibition of Carne Griffiths' beautiful work is here until 28 May.

Working primarily with calligraphy inks, graphite and liquids, such as tea, Griffiths’ fascination with drawing focuses on the creation and manipulation of the drawn line. Images explore human, geometric and floral forms, in a combination of both literal and abstract translation and in response to images and situations encountered in daily life. Images are recorded in a dreamlike sense onto the page where physical boundaries are unimportant. His work creates a journey of escapism which focuses on scenes of awe and wonder, projecting a sense of abandonment and inviting the viewer to share and explore this inner realm.
Originally from Liverpool, Griffiths graduated from the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone in 1995. After completing a one-year KIAD fellowship and moving to London he served an apprenticeship at the longest-established gold wire embroidery firm in the world. Here he worked as a gold wire embroidery designer for twelve years, eventually becoming the creative director. Carne produced intricate designs for the military and the film, theatre, fashion and advertising industries. His designs were used for the uniforms in the films Valkyrie, The Last King of Scotland, and in particular his ‘Red Death Coat’ was used in The Phantom of the Opera. Carne’s elaborate floral designs for Asprey were included in their first ever catwalk collection and his work was featured on the embroidered cover of the 80th Royal Variety Performance programme in 2008.
Since establishing his own studio in 2010, Carne has exhibited in the UK and overseas with work shown at the London Original Print Fair, the Royal Academy, Stroke Art Fair, Affordable Art Fair, the London Art Fair and with solo Exhibitions in Brighton, Hong Kong, Milan and an upcoming show in Hamburg. Carne's illustration work has seen him collaborate with the British photographer Rankin for a six page feature in Hunger magazine as well as featuring in publications worldwide, notably for several covers of the New York Observer, English Heritage magazine and for Brand projects including work for Microsoft, Derwent, Peroni, Lakes Distillery and Ibis Hotels.

Last year, I worked through until Christmas Eve without a break. This year, very belatedly, I've decided to close the shop for a week to spend some much-needed time with family and to recharge. It’s been a tough summer, and I know a little pause will do me good. Thank you, as always, for your kindness and support - it means the world. 💛

BRITISH design BRITISH made on Battle High Street will reopen 10am Tuesday 2 September, with a refreshed me, ready to welcome you.
