I have been a bit hopeless on here lately as work has been so busy since landing back from my trip!

So many gorgeous projects on the go...

A beautiful chinoiserie-inspired look for a home in Wellington, a new kitchen on the drawing board, continuing work on a gorgeous new build on the Kapiti Coast with a mid-century vibe, and more work for a lovely repeat client in Wellington.

And today I'm finalising all the paint colours and finishes for a beautiful makeover of a large Auckland family home.

Oaxaca

A city that completely captured us — from its incredible colour, beautiful architecture and extraordinary craftsmanship to the food, markets and the warmth of its people.

Everywhere you look there is inspiration: richly coloured façades, intricate doors, courtyards, old colonial buildings, contemporary design sitting alongside centuries-old traditions, and an amazing appreciation for handmade craft.

And then there is the food… so much flavour, creativity and tradition. From tiny local spots to beautiful restaurants, Oaxaca is a feast for the senses.

We loved wandering the streets, discovering wonderful shops and galleries, eating our way through the city and simply soaking up the atmosphere. Oaxaca feels authentic, creative and incredibly alive — a place where design and culture are woven into everyday life.

It was such a highlight of our Mexico journey and somewhere I would love to return to.

One week in Mexico City and I’m leaving completely inspired.

This city is an incredible feast for anyone interested in architecture, interiors, art and design — from the extraordinary modernist architecture and bold geometry of Luis Barragán, to historic buildings, colourful façades, incredible museums, markets overflowing with colour and texture, and restaurants where the interiors are every bit as memorable as the food.

I’ve loved discovering the contrast between old and new — raw materials, vibrant colour, beautiful courtyards, lush planting, handcraft, ceramics, textiles and some seriously clever contemporary design. And, of course, the food has been another highlight!

Mexico City feels layered, creative and endlessly surprising. Every street seems to offer another detail worth photographing.

I’ve shared snippets here, but there is so much more from my Mexico travels — including Oaxaca, the coast, hotels, restaurants, architecture, interiors, shopping and all the details that caught my designer’s eye.

After a busy afternoon exploring Mexico City, we found ourselves at La Docena for dinner—and what a great.

Relaxed and stylish, with beautiful timber, warm lighting and just the right amount of buzz, it felt effortlessly cool without trying too hard.

The service was warm and friendly, and every dish was beautifully fresh.

If you go, the ceviche tostada is an absolute must. So simple, so fresh and packed with flavour. It’s one of those dishes you start thinking about ordering again before you’ve even finished it!

Great design, great food, wonderful service and the perfect end to our first day in Mexico City. 🦪🇲🇽

One of the places I’d been looking forward to visiting most was seeing Diego Rivera’s murals in person.

No book or photograph really prepares you for their scale. Standing in front of them, you notice so many details, layers of history and incredible storytelling woven into every section.

As someone who loves art, architecture and design, this was one of those experiences I’d dreamed about for years—and it absolutely lived up to expectations.

Our first morning in Mexico City had us completely captivated.

We wandered through leafy streets, admired the incredible mix of grand European architecture and colourful colonial buildings, and quickly realised this city is every bit as beautiful as I’d imagined.

As an interior designer, I love noticing the details—the carved stonework, decorative tiles, elegant courtyards and those unexpected moments that make you stop in your tracks.

It didn’t take long to understand why so many creatives have fallen in love with Mexico City. I have a feeling this is just the beginning.

With time to fill between flights, we headed to Playa del Rey for a walk and dinner.

Miles of white sand, the Pacific Ocean, lifeguard towers, beach houses and people out walking their dogs. Such a lovely way to ease into holiday mode.

We finished with a casual meal at Bacari before heading back to the airport. The watermelon salad with whipped feta was so good I’d happily go back just for that. There was a queue when we, so bookings recommended.

Next stop… Mexico 🇲🇽

For years I’ve been asked to share my favourite places to stay, eat, shop and explore around the world. Rather than having you scroll back through years of posts on Bridget Foley Design, I’ve created a dedicated space for all of my travel recommendations.

This page is about finding places with soul and not the obvious traps.

The neighbourhood with the best morning coffee. The market you’ll want to wander for hours. The independent shops you’ll wish you could pack in your suitcase. The beautifully designed café tucked down a side street. The restaurant you’ll still be talking about years later. The architecture that stops you in your tracks. Art galleries that inspire the creative mind. The Airbnb with character. The boutique hotel in exactly the right part of town.

We travel because we love experiencing a place, not just seeing it.

As an interior designer, I’m always drawn to destinations through a design lens, but I also love discovering the people, food and atmosphere that make each place unique.

This is the page I’ll be sending people to when they ask, “Where should we stay?” “Which neighbourhood should we choose?” “Where should we eat?” and “What shouldn’t we miss?” I hope it inspires your next adventure.

And where better to begin than Mexico—a country I’ve dreamed of visiting ever since buying one of Herbert Ypma’s beautiful books on Mexican style years ago. Its architecture, craftsmanship, colour and culture have captivated my imagination ever since, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

I’ll still be sharing travel on Bridget Foley Design, but here you’ll find much more—carefully curated recommendations, neighbourhood guides and the places I’d happily return to again and again.
